The name is Verity (thus the title, Code Name Verity) (also I haven't figured the main character's name, but I read it from the back of the book so).
Apparently, Verity had been caught by the German in Nazi-occupied France. To avoid the humiliation (of being interrogated in underwear) and avoid the possibility of the pain she had to bear if she refused, she told the Germans 11 sets of codes and wrote a confession.
