I ask my author friends to read what I'm working on and share their responses, and then I force myself to write. Sometimes it's really hard, admittedly, and I look at it like starting a new workout routine or diet. The most pain happens in the very beginning, when it all just seems like too much. But that initial resistance is the body's/mind's way of telling me that I'm on the verge of something really big, and as long as I push through, the results are electrifying. Then it seems I just can't stop.

That's a tie. The first is that I get to make up whatever I want, to delve deep into emotions, situations, characters, and worlds in whatever way I see fit. There's a certain reality I experience through my own work that I just can't give up.
The second is that I get to inspire readers in whatever ways are suitable for them. My goal is to illicit reactions in readers - whether it's joy, sadness, heart-pounding excitement, sweaty palms, rage, annoyance, or anticipation. As long as somebody feels SOMETHING when they read my work, I've done my job.

Just keep writing. No matter what it is, whether or not you want people to see it, or who tells you to do something else. Never put down that pen / close that computer. The most amazing things happen when you don't give up.

My time is split between so many things right now. First on the roster is the final review of 'Mother of the Drackan: Book Two of Gyenona's Children', which will be out early 2016.
My current work in progress is a Dystopian Sci-Fi titled 'Sleepwater Beat'. Set in the US in the not-so-distant future, this book covers government control, pharmaceutical and media conspiracy, black market dealings, human trafficking and experimentation, guerrilla warfare, and a group of people wielding a variety of X-Men-like powers, able to physically, emotionally, and psychologically affect those around them using certain types of words. The protagonist gets dragged along through the conspiratorial debacle and forced to choose who she wants to be and where she wants to belong.
I also am engulfed by two works of collaborative fiction with eight other authors. The first is 'Bit' - a modern-day zombie story with a fabulous twist in technological/medical details - which will be out early 2016 as well. The second is 'The Irregulars' - a macabre sort of 'Oliver Twist' tale of eight urchins, all with extreme physical and psychological handicaps plus a myriad of superpowers, who have to "grow up" together as they escape being hunted down.
A lot of fun, crazy stuff coming up soon!

The greatest inspiration for the act of writing comes from withing the writing community itself - sharing my works in progress with other authors, reading theirs, discussing it, giving and receiving support and feedback. There's nothing quite like delving into the brains of other authors and sharing a mutual love of words to remind me why I do this.
After that comes the short list: reading great books, watching epic movies, the occasional trailer for well-written t.v. series, and the fact that I can't NOT write.

Oddly enough, the ideas for 'Daughter of the Drackan' (and its upcoming sequel 'Mother of the Drackan', because they were written together) came from a combination of playing 'Haunted' by Evanescence on repeat during seemingly long car rides to my dad's house, gazing out at the cliffs and peaks of the Rocky Mountains on the way, and a good number of intensely vivid dreams.
