I am directing a play in Hollywood called Extremities written in 1978 but oh sooooooo timely.
I am also working on the screen version of Hiding Out; outlining my next book and producing two feature films that I have written.

Write what you know. The world, the characters, the town. You can always fictionalize but begin writing from a place that is home to your soul.
Also, be willing to write poorly. No one writes brilliant out of the gate. Just write. Just write. Just keep writing.

Laura, thanks so much for your question! Absolutely, unless it becomes a TV series but for sure I think it could very well be on the screen - big or little. As for the actress to play the complicated younger me, there are so many great young actresses but I'd start with Elle or Dakota Fanning, Saoirse Ronan and I adore Emma Watson too.

A few years ago I wrote and performed a solo show playing my father called Secrets of a Holy Father in order to better understand his complicated and secretive life. Although we can never walk in one's shoes, taking on a character as an actor is the closest I've gotten. My now agent, Joel Gotler, at Intellectual Property Group, saw the show and suggested writing the book. I knew for years that I would write a memoir about my stranger than fiction journey but for sure my solo play was the gust of wind that caused it to set sail.

I actually don't believe in writer's block. So long as you keep writing in those moments when that voice in your head says, "this is crap!" then you never have writer's block.
You have to be willing to write through the noise of "this sucks" but that's true about all art. You can't create and judge at the same time. A writer's block is a choice to listen to that self-criticsm, stop typing and close the computer.
