I'll be answering questions about my new book in the Paradise Cursed series Tortured Spirit, but this conundrum from my own life might creep into a Paradise Cursed story one day. It's the "Black Hole." I'm a collector. I collect books, bottle caps, clean crumpled paper - all organized and with a purpose, so I'm not one of those writers living in a maze of junk. But there's a black hole somewhere in my house where things vanish. I absolutely know I have a book titled Euphonic Mnemonics, because it's cataloged, but it vanished. My favorite scarf, which I wear frequently, gone. A photo of son, gone. Have Mary Norton's "The Borrowers" moved into the crevices of my house? No. I've looked. I've listened. It's definitely a black hole, somewhere, and it's gobbling up my things.

Many years ago I sailed on a tall ship in the Caribbean, and it struck me as a wonderful setting for a book. I wasn't a fiction writer at the time, but I used the setting a few years later for a romance novel (rejected because it had too much mystery). Still, I couldn't forget the feelings I had hearing the wind in the sails, surrounded by water and so far from land.
Then about 2 years ago, having always been intrigued by the notion of immortality, I began to toy with the idea of an immortal pirate, a tall ship, and the Caribbean. From that idea sprang Paradise Cursed.

Everywhere I look--really look--is an idea for a story. One day I drove past a bus stop and saw a barefoot man carrying his shoes. Why? At an art gallery, I saw a painting of a woman with a bird sitting on her head. Why did the artist paint it? Why does the bird sit there? What's going to happen next? Recently, I became intrigued by a tree growing in my back yard. I love that tree, it's shape, it's shade, but I began thinking about how things grow wild in my part of Texas during rainy weather. That thought prompted a short story, "The Grinning Bones," in my most recent anthology, Death Edge 4, 7 Soul-Shrieking Tales of Suspense.

I'm not sure I believe in writer's block. When a book I'm writing stumps me, it usually means I need to revisit the plot, the location, but most importantly, the characters and their goals, problems, fears, joys...

My first series with Dixie Flannigan was gritty, sometimes dark, often sarcastically humorous. I enjoy being Dixie. She's a hoot.
But I hate getting bogged down in one personality, so I created Booker Krane, male, somewhat older, curmudgeonly at times. His first appearance in Here Lies a Wicked Man captured a new group of readers, and that's fun for me. So I'm working on book 2, Here Lies a Brazen Woman, which I plan to publish in summer 2016.

Be honest in your writing. Don't listen to the naysayers, don't copy what's currently "hip," just write what's in your heart - the darkest parts as well as the brightest.

As a writer of mystery and paranormal thrillers, I get to become so many characters that are smarter, funnier and braver than I am. Writing is a thrill ride, and every ride is different.
