The idea for Mosaic first came to me when I visited the setting--an island in Florida with a fascinating history and plenty of pirate tales surrounding it. But the story developed into something considerably more than a ghost story or a pirate tale over the years of writing it. I wasn't satisfied with its original structure. I wanted to create something a little more artistic. And I wanted to express the emotions of people who have experienced shattered lives in a unique way, and also convey hope to those who are suffering. I've had my own dark period, and I think the essence of the story was borne out of that. And yet, I still had to keep it somewhat of a thriller and mystery story.

I'm not sure anyone is simply inspired to write. I've always written, here and there, since I was a child. I adored stories. I still do. They make me feel alive, even when I'm sad or tired or bored. I have a crazy imagination and I like to step into other worlds. It's who I am, not something external that motivates me. I do need a quiet place, though, where I can step out of reality to make those worlds come to life.

Don't be afraid of lousy writing. The words have to be written before they can be rewritten. The story needs to take some shape even if it's awkward and cringeworthy before it can be molded into something better. Keep writing and don't give up just because someone criticizes. It takes years to develop your skill, just as it does in any career. There's no magic wand. It's just hard work . . . but very worthwhile.

I rarely have writer's block, but when I have trouble jumping back into a draft I've set aside, I explore the research again to stimulate ideas.
