The story needs to take some shape even if it's awkward and cringeworthy before it can be molded into something better. Keep writing and don't give up just because someone criticizes. It takes years to develop your skill, just as it does in any career. There's no magic wand. It's just hard work . . . but very worthwhile.(less)

Writer's Block

This is how I feel. You may be aware, or maybe not, that I haven’t been writing lately. No new novels, no extension of my current series, no short stories or commentary or anything. I’ve been in a severe state of writer’s block, a paralysis I’ve never experienced before. Yes, I’ve experienced delay in output, because of surgery and illness. Yes, I’ve had difficulty sitting or standing in front of Read more of this blog post »

“and was now bending over the golden effigy of a bat, perhaps Zotz, the Underworld god.”
Deborah Jackson, Sinkhole

“Did your parents ever tell you a sweet bedtime story that your busy little brain turned into a nightmare the instant you fell asleep? Did Cinderella ever become ten feet tall and carry an axe? Did Little Red Riding Hood actually transform into a werewolf (after she was bitten, of course). Did Scaredy Squirrel really fall out of the tree, land in poison ivy and a nest of tarantulas, and eventually get eaten by sharks, proving that he’d been right to be afraid, all along? Sure, it happened. And then you would wake up, shaking and sweating, wanting to run into their bedroom, scoot between the sheets, and spill. But you knew that if you did, they’d stop telling you stories.
