'Learning Italian' came to me after reading a number of holiday reads. I started learning Italian a year or so ago and quickly realised I could read and listen to it, but speaking was the most difficult part of it. My mother had French cousins who they used to holiday with so I took this and changed it a little. Elise's voice came through me, how I would think and respond to certain situations.

Music is a big inspiration, always has been. In the past, this was my escapism. I also use a lot of my life experiences to help me write, including locations, character quirks, thoughts and reactions to certain situations. I've always been an over thinker, most of the women in my family are. My sister is an artist, my mother a crafter and now I've found my passion for writing.

I've been writing for a couple of years now so I have a number of works already waiting to be edited. I'm hoping to release two more novels this year but I'm also working on a novella as a Christmas giveaway. My next book is a romantic suspense, the third another romantic comedy. Next year I have another romantic suspense which is broken into three books. All of them have been written, rewritten. They just need to be edited and proof read. I want them to be made available all in one year so people aren't waiting too long for the next instalment or worrying I won't finish it.

Two things really:
1. Write and read - a lot. It's a craft you need to keep working on like all arts. I have definitely got better with experience, including my ideas, my style, my vocabulary, even down to grammar.
2. Write for you and remember that when people give you negative comments. If it's constructive, fine. If it offers you nothing but criticism, keep in mind this is your love, your passion and it's ok if others don't like it.

Escapism, getting my thoughts out on paper and seeing what I can achieve. If I don't like what I've written, how can I expect others to like it. The first book I ever wrote is still in my second drafts folder, waiting to be made better because I can't quite get it right. I hope to because it's a series of stand alone novels and the final one is one of my favourites. But this first one is personal and looks at mental health and troubled backgrounds. I'm not going to put out something I'm not proud of.

I stop that particular piece, give it a rest and begin something else. Sometimes I'll go through periods of editing, rewriting things I've already written just to keep the momentum going. I have several WIPs at a time, a rewrite folder and a third draft folder. If I get new ideas I write them down. This all started as a hobby, still is in a way, so I don't worry about how I should be writing, I just go for it. Writing a blog helps because their short, based on real experiences and thoughts. If all else fails, I read.

When I walked into the empty staffroom, the lights still off, the cold biting the air with a wintry chill, I turned to see the red writing written in perfect script across the whiteboard. The rumours are true, Ofsted are on their way!

I'm not sure about my summer reads but I know some of my favourite authors have some new releases coming up, including TL Swan and LJ Shen. They'll definitely have me up at stupid o'clock reading with the promise of just one more chapter.

What child hasn't tried to walk through their wardrobe to try and get to Narnia? I always wanted to go to the strange and fantastical. One of the reasons I read and write so much is so I can escape reality every now and then and exist as someone else, somewhere else for just a while. I'm an eighties child so fantasy was definitely where I started.
