I think The Martian, once more. I thought it would be useful to read it again, not so much for the exciting story, but for an examination of the author's style. It's written in first person and as it so happens, my second novel will be written in first person. So, why not learn from a master.

I was lucky on the first novel. I didn't have more than a couple of pauses to mild writer's block. I relied greatly on my own experiences, transporting them into my characters. There's a downside to that. Now I have to become a real fiction writer and come up with some new experiences!

I'm working on a second novel. This is be a bit different. It'll be told in the first person. The setting will be in these times and likely something local to where I live. I'll put it under the thriller genre. For now, the working title is Captive. That gives a little hint of the plot. With any luck, I'll have it done by the fall.

My whole life I've loved reading history. I'd often imagine what it must have been like to be at the signing of the Magna Carta or the Declaration of Independence. Or experience - from a safe distance of course - the Battle of Gettysburg and landing at Omaha Beach. Well, none of that will happen.
But if it could happen. If there was a way to travel back in time. Or forward in time just to see if we have managed to survive as a civilization. That is the world that H.G. Well created in The Time Machine. To visit not one fictional world, but all our worlds that were, or will be. Now that would be something.

I was scraping away dark brown cork glued to a basement wall in the house we just bought when the phone rings. "He has a mass in his brain."
Horror, real, gut hitting horror is the kind of horror that can actually happen. Because vampires and zombies don't exist, but a life threatening cancer in your child can happen. And it did to me.

I will leave behind a work of my own creation. Whether you're an artist, a writer, or a carpenter, you leave something that you made. That was the real thrill for me.

Keep at it. At little each day. Don't think you have to have every turn of the plot all worked out before you start. Just start. You'll think of something. Besides, watching the storyline evolve is part of the fun.
Of course, I've written only one novel. No doubt others with far greater experience might have a different take.

It was something I always wanted to do. And I felt I had the ability to write, at least on some level. So, it simply came down to proving to myself I could write a decent story.
There is another reason. I suppose I could have spent the time and resources play a lot of golf. But once I walked off the 18th hole, it would not last. With a novel, I was leaving something longer lasting than the memory of a good five iron shot onto the green.

My only book, in truth. At least, for now. I'd say, the story came from more than one place. I've always wanted to see if I could write something worthy. Now I have written a story. I'll leave it to the readers to decide if it was worthy.
Then there were our collective experiences in the last half decade. Between our politics and the pandemic, it has been a difficult time for our country. Somewhere in all that was seed for the novel.
It's a story that we do not want to become our history; a possible history that projects our current politics into the near future. I hope it will stay just what it is - fiction.
