Joseph Falank With the film version of THE DARK TOWER coming out in August, my plan is to finish Books III (The Waste Lands) and IV (Wizard and Glass) before then. I also want to read GWENDY'S BUTTON BOX, STILL ALICE, and WONDER.
Joseph Falank I walk away from the WIP (work-in-progress). I find that if I just step away and maybe go for a walk, the solution to whatever problem I'm having with the story usually gets solved. My mind has a hard time letting go if I find myself in trouble, but I take off the pressure by doing something different. If the writing isn't happening, I go for a walk to ease the pressure. You only think better when you're thinking clearly.
Joseph Falank I get to make things up! I also get to use all the story ideas that pop into my head (and I get a lot of them so I don't know what I would do if I didn't like writing) and configure them to be an inspirational, suspenseful, meaningful tale for others to (hopefully) enjoy. Writing is my outlet.
Joseph Falank At the risk of repeating all you've ever heard other writers say: Don't give up! The road to getting published is a long one full of potholes and twists and turns, but, eventually, if you keep at it and really want it, you'll get to where you want to go.
Joseph Falank I just finished a draft of a new novel - an adult story this time - called PICTURES, which will be coming out late next year.
Joseph Falank One of the biggest influences on my writing is The Twilight Zone (I'm a native of Binghamton, NY, where Rod Serling once lived a portion of his young life and set many of the episodes in), and, like that show, I use the "What If..." factor. I like to think of something supernatural, then think of my main character the story will wrap around, and go from there.
Joseph Falank I write about the things that scare me - not necessarily monsters or noises in the dark, but about the things in life we cannot control. I then put my main character through the wringer, confronting this fear of mine, and we both come out of it in a better place than when we started. For SEEING, I wrote about abandonment a little bit but it's more about confirmation that there is more to this world than the mundane we see around us every day. It's also a little about faith but I wouldn't put the stamp on SEEING being a religious book at all - no denomination is mentioned or implied in the book.
