Rebecca Bielawski My most recent book is SPLENDOR THE MAGNIFICENT. I was painting, I painted a beautiful blue bird trying out new brushes. Then I said: what's this guy's story? The whole book was based around that one painting. Also, I had always been annoyed by something grandmothers do a lot here in Spain. That is, telling children everyday repeatedly a thousand times that they are handsome or pretty. I don't think it's constructive to impress the idea that physical beauty is the reason why we love them. That is one of the central themes of the book.
Rebecca Bielawski In the genre of children's books, my advice is keep writing, the more books the better. Series' are a great idea. Marketing is essential, be willing to spend a lot of time on it. Writing the book is by far the easiest and fastest part. As far as sales go, keep your expectations low in the beginning, it takes a long time to build your brand.
Rebecca Bielawski The biggest factor affecting book sales is discoverability, if no one sees your book it doesn't matter how great it it. Reviews and hype are important too. When it come down to instant appeal, I think the illustrations are decisive. The text is obviously very important but the cover, for example, is crucial. Sorry Gracie for the late response.
Rebecca Bielawski Sorry Alicia, there is no excuse for replying this late but I just saw your message. I do write in Spanish but I always have my texts reviewed by competent native speakers several times. I often don't put my name on the translations because I fear I will be criticised because my name is not Spanish. It is a problem with perception, but also an insecurity that I have. Yes, as a teacher you are in a unique position to test your books but also have a valuable insight into how children perceive things and what gets them interested in a topic. The classroom is a treasure trove of inspiration! If you want to network, contact me through my website. At least I might see the message in less than 5 years. lol
Rebecca Bielawski sorry, I guess I need to check in more often. If you still want to know, my printer is quares.es. I'm not sure about portugal, they may have partners there, you can always ask.
Rebecca Bielawski In the case of children's picture books, generally speaking its not difficult because there is inspiration all around you but especially with two small children who constantly interpret the world in amazing ways. I frequently borrow their perspective.
Rebecca Bielawski I'm working on a nature picture book series for preschool to first graders. The first book is Meet Bacteria! which is out in 2 weeks on the 9th of Oct. I am finalising the enhanced Kindle version now. I have finished the second book too; Bees like Flowers, but it will be released in December in Print and Kindle versions. The 3rd book is what I will have to turn my attention to next.
Rebecca Bielawski Flexibility and creativity.
Rebecca Bielawski There are good days and bad days, not only for writing, but for illustrating. It's definitely better to avoid drawing if you have illustrator's block because if you're not feeling creative, you can do more harm than good.
