David Lowther I saw him at Harrogate (Crime Festival) about 4 years ago. He came across, rather surprisingly for the writer of such dark novels, as a free spirit who does something for a while and then moves on. He said as much although his football career was curtailed by injury. It does make you wonder when he'll move on from Harry, or indeed writing. He's a very gregarious person. But he is a talent.
David Lowther Since most of my novels are European based I guess I wouldn't travel to those countries with which I'm already familiar. However, having just read The Thread, a superb novel by Victoria Hislop, I'm very tempted to say Greece and, in particular Thessaloniki where the novel is set.

Hislop makes the city so exciting and, as a major port, has a wealth of history, dating back to biblical times and earlier. It was once part of the Byzantine Empire and later under the rule of the Ottomans. Despite the tragedies that have befalling Thessaloniki; fire, population exchange, earthquake, German occupation, civil war and dictatorship, there must be so much still remaining to illuminate those past days.
David Lowther Hi

I try to mix fiction with non-fiction. I'm still reading 'The Pursuit of Power' Richard Evans' History of Europe from 1815 to 1914. I'm about half way through but hope to complete it by the beginning of August.

With such a detailed book such as the above I also read other books at the same time. On my list for the next couple of months are The Grasshopper Lies Heavy by Chandler Duke, Agents of the State by Mike Nicol, The Plot against America by Philip Roth, Val McDermid's The Distant Echo, Deborah Lipstadt's Denying the Holocaust and Dadland by Keggie Carew - quite a variety I'm sure you'll agree.

Happy reading to all
David
David Lowther Whatever happened to my two class mates at school who were expelled for shoplifting when I was fourteen and never heard of again.
David Lowther Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro in Dennis Lehane's private eye thrillers set in Boston USA. Both are incredibly tough and determined and don't mind crossing the line to get a result. They work so well together and Lehane draws each character beautifully. Both are essentially good people from the wrong end of Boston. The first in this superb series is A Drink Before the War.
David Lowther Hi Anna
With my three books I wrote the first draft in longhand (pencil and rubber) and then typed it up. I was advised that if my typing wasn't top class I should use longhand and concentrate on the narrative instead of the typing.
Once I've written then typed the first draft I send it to a friend for comments and proofreading. When this is returned I correct it and return the corrected MS to him. This goes on until he's totally satisfied and then I send the final MS to my editor. Two Families at War (my most recent novel) was read and commented on four times by my friend, had two edits and then two professional proof readers. I'm happy with the outcome. I hope this helps.
David Lowther So far I've never had it. Once I start writing it just flows from my pencil (I write for about 3 hours each afternoon and then spend the following morning typing it up. If I did get writer's block, I'd put everything aside for a month or so and go and watch movies, cricket or rugby matches (depending on the time of the year). I would NOT sit moping about it and I would make certain my time was fully occupied.
David Lowther As a writer of modern historical fiction (chiefly) the research I find fascinating. 90% of what I know about 20th. century history I've learned since beginning my research for The Blue Pencil in 2010.
David Lowther Enjoy it. You're doing something you want to do. Don't feel you're doing this just for money. Write because you have something to say and you want others to enjoy your work.
David Lowther Finishing off my book about the Durham Light Infantry - submission by January 1st., and then working on maps and illustrations for that book in January. After that promoting my second novel Two Families at War, due to be published in February and then planning the third Summer of 39
David Lowther My fascination with twentieth century history. I taught this for a while. There are so many unanswered questions, so many what ifs? To blend these novels is great fun.
David Lowther I was asked by my publisher to write something about the Durham Light Infantry so I chose to focus on their role in the liberation of Belsen concentration camp, the 70th. anniversary of which falls in April 2015
