I am working on "The Greatest Cattle Drive California to Oregon, 1837: A dramatization of the diary of Philip L. Edwards." Philip Edwards is not direct relative of mine, the surname is a coincidence, but he has a fascinating story about the first big cattle drive in North America, preceding the Texas cattle drives by 20-30 years. However, he never completed the diary, for whatever reason. So I am dramatizing his terse phrases by fleshing out his words and completing the story of how 10 men, led by fur trapper Ewing Young, drove a heard of 700 longhorn cattle from San Jose, California, to the Willamette Valley in Oregon, crossing the formidable and uncharted Siskiyou Mountains in the process.

I met the great-grandson of a Civil War (American) veteran, and he showed me his great-grandfather's letters, diaries, and retrospective pieces he wrote following the war. None of the material had been published, and languished in boxes, almost forgotten. I told him, "These need to published so others can read this man's story." He agreed, and the rest, as the saying goes, is history. "What the Private Saw: The Civil War Letters & Diaries of Oney Foster Sweet" hit the street on April 9, 2015, the 150th anniversary of Lee's surrender to Grant at the Appomattox Court House.

Write! Every day, whether you feel like it or not.

Writer's block, IMHO, is a myth, an excuse to procrastinate. As a professional journalist, I did not have the luxury of "writer's block." I had deadlines to meet, so I sat down and wrote, whether I felt like or not. The key is putting words down, even if it makes no sense at first. Patterns emerge and you mold it into something others can comprehend.
