“Well, I'm naked... You're naked, we're in the same bed, and I don't remember coming here willingly. Put yourself in my shoes, what would you think?"
"You weren't wearing any when I found you."
"Wearing what?" He saw the confusion on her face and explained further.
"Shoes... You were barefoot when I found you."
"You found me? Where?"
"In the woods, two nights ago.”

“Angela nodded, her resolve hardening. “Thank you for getting me out,” she said, her voice steady but tinged with genuine gratitude.
Kenji leaned back in his seat, his long fingers resting lightly on the edge of his thigh as his gaze turned contemplative. He stared out the window, the glow of streetlights catching the edges of his sharp profile. “That’s what you do after the milk is spilled. You bring the broom and the mop and clean the mess.”
A chuckle escaped Angela’s lips. “I don’t think Louise would appreciate being called ‘the broom and the mop.’”
Kenji turned back to her, his eyes glittering with amusement as a faint smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Perhaps not. But let’s be honest, she did clean up the mess rather spectacularly.”

“It wasn’t a dream, it was a glimpse of the future. You’re a Shadow, Rae. That means you’re human but you have magic ancestry. That makes you also a vessel for magic. With the right training and blood magic, you can become a powerful ally or a formidable enemy to my kind. We call you Shadows because once you tap into your powers, you are invisible to witches. That makes you dangerous to the Council, and if they get wind of your existence, hellhounds will come for you.”

“Maya stopped briefly to light a gas lantern. As the wick flickered to life and grew bold, they crossed the parking lot and entered the forest. Dark cloaks and gas lanterns at 3:00 am. Did Halloween come early this year?”

“Bonsoir, mon cher,” she said. “I’ve missed you.” Her French accent wrapped around the words like silk. Evelyn’s eyes trailed down his chest, lingering for a beat before she met his gaze, a knowing smile playing on her lips.
A faint smirk touched Kenji’s lips as he plucked a crisp white shirt from the wood hanger. “You’re early.”
She shrugged one shoulder, the movement languid. “Addison always says you’re a man who appreciates efficiency.” She rose to her feet and approached him, stopping just a step too close, her voice dropping to a purr. “How efficient are we being tonight?”

“You’re cooking?”
The vampire turned from the stove, a wooden spoon in one hand and a knowing smirk on his lips. “What gave it away? The heavenly aroma or the rare sight of me standing near a burner?”
“It’s been a while since I’ve seen you cook. I’m flattered,” Addison said, leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed. “What’s going on?”
Kenji stirred the pot casually, tasting the broth. “Don’t be. It’s not for you, this time. Although I could save you a serving for your trouble.” Smiling, he turned to stir into the pot. “Our neighbor is sick. I’m making her chicken soup.”
Addison blinked. “Should I be worried?”
Kenji raised an eyebrow. “What, jealous? I sometimes cook for you, too.”
Addison snorted. “And I appreciate it every time. I’m not jealous, but it feels suspicious. Why her?”
Kenji shrugged, returning his attention to the pot. “She’s brave. I like bravery. It’s a rare and appealing trait. And she has a good heart. I’m simply being a good neighbor.”
Addison’s smirk deepened, his tone teasing. “Sure. Nothing to do with her being pretty, then?”
“I wouldn’t know,” Kenji said honestly. “I’ve never seen her. But brave? That’s far more appealing to me than looks.”

“I am mortal, confined in a limited human existence, and I accept that it is humanly impossible for me to learn everything. What's your excuse?!” She raised her hands emphatically. Then she saw the bemused look on his face and realized that she might have come across a little too passionate in her short speech there.
“Are you accusing me of wasting eternity, instead of learning about past truths that have no importance to me at all other than some degree of entertainment?” his voice was laced with amusement as if not to seem harsh, but Rae got the point.”

“This camp was run by Quin, a shifter with greenish-yellow eyes who turned into a mountain lion. Judging by his attitude you’d say he was there because he lost a bet. Quin was a man of few words who appeared to be in his mid-forties, but shifters aged way slower than humans. He could have easily been a few hundreds of years old. Perhaps life hadn’t been kind to him and that shaped him into the burly, grumpy man he was today. Rae joked once that he’s more grizzly than mountain lion. That earned her extra training because ‘when it hurts it’s not funny anymore’. Training stopped only when she dropped from exhaustion.”

“Angela stepped deeper into the party, past the glamorous masks and golden champagne, and into something darker. In the middle of the room, a girl tilted her head back with a dreamy sigh as a man’s mouth found her throat. The sharp glint of fangs. A spill of red. No one screamed. No one ran. The music played on, and Angela realized—with a slow, creeping horror—that she had just stepped into a wolf’s den, and the sheep were all smiling.”

“Screams in the dark and blood pooling on the ground - Chloe’s words remained at the back of her mind and a sense of unease made her stomach churn. Something bad was coming.”

“So, Michael was a vampire. That was both good and bad. It was good because vampires were strong and fast, both qualities you want in an ally. And it was bad because vampires crave blood, and right now, she was the only source.”

“What the hell happened with you two?”
“I’d rather not talk about it if you don’t mind.”
“Ok… one portion of awkward silence with a side of sulking coming right up!”
