Hearing both Welsh and English throughout her childhood, Beth has always been fascinated by words - the sound of them, the shape when writing them, and making sense of them.
Words are magic. They can be put together into a story and then, every person who reads that story, reads a different tale from everyone else. Sometimes, you can read the same story at different times in your life and find it is a completely new tale to you. So being a writer of stories is truly special.
Beth mainly writes about people and places of long ago and far away, but always people and places that are real to her.

The magic of Silk

SILK, originally spun only in China,

was gradually traded as far west as Persia, before Medieval rulers managed to acquire silkworms and mulberry trees to set up their own silk industries - in Lebanon, in the Byzantine Empire and much later in Europe.
The trading routes from China to the Mediterranean and into Europe soon became known as the Silk Roads as silk was the main product. Valued for its Read more of this blog post »

“So this is goodbye?' In spite of her efforts, her voice shook.
They walked to the bottom of the road and turned back up again before he said, 'Yes, Anna, this is goodbye. Promise me you'll be very careful.'
She raised her face to his. 'If this is goodbye, may I ask you something?'
'Anything, my infant.'
'I want you to kiss me - properly.'
He gave a gasp of laughter. 'But that would be very improper.'
She grasped his lapels. 'Please...'
Giles darted a look around. The road was empty of people. He pulled her a few steps further along to a doorway. There he stood and looked at her intently. She gazed hopefully up into his green eyes.”

“As soon as the door closed behind the man, Arnaut strode across and raised her hand to his lips. Next he walked round her, his head on one side. 'I'm relieved to see I judged the fit correctly. You look very well.'
He sounded so pleased with himself that Louise had to smile. 'I think you've had some practice,' she murmured.”

Beth Elliott, The Rake and his Honour

“All his life he’d believed that birth and privilege were an automatic passport to principle and the finer feelings generally unknown amongst the lower orders. Now he knew that, in extreme circumstances, the differences boiled down to little more than a smattering of education and the quality of one’s coat”

Beth Elliott Hello Yelda,

It's lovely to meet another person with an interest in Ottoman history. I thought from your name you must have Turkish connections. I've visited izmir many years ago. My husband was Turkish [from Ankara] and we taught at Ataturk University in Erzurum for 5 years. I'm very interested in Sultan Selim III and also Sultan Mahmud II and my stories do mention them. I've written short articles on them on my blog. http://regencytales.blogspot.com -Difficult times:the reign of Sultan Selim III 27/01/13 and - Reforming Rulers 2, Sultan Mahmud II 26/01/16. I went to visit the little palace where Sultan Selim spent his summers, and used it as the home for my hero in Scandalous Lady, set in 1811. The story you've marked to read is also set partly in Constantinople in 1804.
Good luck with your novel. Best wishes, Beth

Yelda Basar Moers Hi Beth,

Thank you so much for friending me! I have seen your books before and wanted to read them! What part or Era of the Ottoman Empire have you researched? I've been researching the early 19th century, basically the Regency period in Britain, but the reign of Selim III and Mahmud II for about 10 years for my book. Have you been to Turkey? I was born in Izmir, my father is from Istanbul, my mother Izmir. Thank you for reaching out to me! I look forward to reading your books. Which one is the one set in the Ottoman Empire? I think it's the one I marked "to read." Take Care.

Yelda
