To Plan or Not to Plan, That is the Question

In just about every conference I’ve attended, every online discussion I’ve been privy to, and every “How To” book I’ve read about writing, one piece of advice always seems to surface; “Have a plan for your story.” Well, I can honestly say I have tried it, twice, and that was three times too many for me. I find it infinitely easier to let the story write itself. And not necessarily in the right order.

More often than not when I sit in front of my laptop I have no idea what I am about to write. Every now and then I have an inkling of where a particular scene will go, but for the most part the book is the boss. I am simply the transcriber.

For instance, Amorous was complete and ready for its release when my “advisors” pushed me to write a prequel and release it first. I had absolutely no idea what the short story would be about but the “plan” was to write about the hero or the heroine. As it turned out I sat down in front of my laptop and Conceit was born, the introduction of the antagonist and ultimate bad boy, Jake Winston.

My second attempt to “plan” a story was Mind Games. I was actually quite proud of my outline. But then I began to write. The story wanted to take another route and I fought it at every turn. I forced it to follow the plan, but then I got stuck. I couldn’t make the final scene fit with the story. It sounded great in the outline but it was very out of character for both the hero and the heroine.

So, I put the book away and worked on another project. Six months later I pulled Mind Games back out and conceded defeat. I started from the beginning and rewrote the story, this time letting the story write itself. It was so much better than my outline I was actually embarrassed to take credit for my first draft.

When it came time to write Redemption, Jake’s story, I took a huge leap of faith and threw the plan right out the window. I let Jake walk his own path, and what a path it is. The story is expected and unexpected at the same time. Jake has amazed me as I have gotten to know him better and the people in his life are just as interesting, especially his heroine, Sophia. I can’t wait for its release later this year.

Now, I am far from an expert in proper writing techniques and I am certainly no J.K. Rowling, but the best advice I can give to any aspiring author is to trust the story. Its plan will be infinitely better than yours. I guarantee it.

Happy writing!

The Ultra-Sexy Spirit of a Man

Almost a year ago I wrote about Making the Perfect Hero, and in that blog I followed the advice of the “experts”. Since then I have crafted a few lead male characters who are strong alpha types that possess most of the characteristics the “experts” recommend. But in the process of creating my masterpieces of male perfection, I discovered that I prefer a slightly different recipe. My heroes must have the immortal spirit of a man. I’m not talking about physical immortality, rather a spiritual immortality. He must possess a will to survive that is impossible to kill. Even when his last hope has been lost, he must still keep fighting to go on. Not because he is arrogant, crazy, or stubborn, but because the only alternative is to surrender his soul, his spirit, to the forces that are determined to destroy him.

Now the question is, how do you recognize such men? It’s easier than you may think. Let me explain it this way.

For the ladies reading this, imagine for a moment you’re sitting on a bench in the park. The sun is shining, the temperature is a beautiful 72°F, and a gentle summer breeze is blowing. It’s a Saturday afternoon and you’re enjoying a break in your otherwise busy day of running errands, a few minutes to regenerate your strength before you jump back into the fray called life.

While you sit there enjoying the beautiful spring scenery, one at a time two men stop and sit on a bench across the path from you. Both are dressed for running. Since it’s such a nice warm day both have little clothing on besides their shorts and shoes.

The first man is every woman’s fantasy. His muscles are toned and defined, and the fine sheen of sweat covering his body gives a heart stopping sexiness to his perfect tan. He sees you looking at him and he smiles. His gleaming white teeth put the icing on the cake to his gorgeous physique. You covertly study his form which includes the always enticing, and undeniably obvious, male attributes that separate the sexes. He leans forward and rests his elbows on his knees and gives you a wink. His expression is part flirtatious, part innocence, and you start fantasizing about how he would make the perfect mate.

But then the other man sits back from tying his shoe and you see a thin scar across his torso. How could you miss it? It stands out in relief like a pale brush stroke against his otherwise rugged looking tan. It’s the kind of tan a man gets from working in the sun all day, not lying in a tanning bed. His physique is less defined, but leaves no doubt in your mind he is a man who has never shied away from hard work. He sees you looking at him and gives you a kind and gentle smile. In his eyes you see strength, courage, and determination, and the sheer will to survive at all costs. Your heart begins to flutter and a desire to stand by his side as he forges his way through life begins to surface.

At some point you realize Mr. Perfect Physique is gone. When he left you have no idea, because the pull of the other man’s spirit has been too great to resist, and even to blink was a risk that he would be gone when you opened your eyes again. All too soon, he gets to his feet and continues his run. Without hesitation you check the time and make plans to be in this same spot next Saturday. And just to make sure you don’t miss him, you plan to be an hour early…maybe two…after all, your life would feel empty if you never saw him again. But, why?

That’s easy. In just a few minutes his presence and body language showed you he is the kind of man who will fight to his last breath for all that he believes in and to protect those he cares about. You saw in his eyes the kind of spirit that cannot be tamed, or controlled, or destroyed. You saw in him the type of man who is irresistible to every good woman, because this man possesses the ultra-sexy, immortal spirit of a man.

Happy reading!

Let’s Make a Date

Many experts would agree dating is the most important precursor to any romantic relationship. As defined by The Free Dictionary App by Farlex, a date is an engagement to go out socially with another person, often out of romantic interest. It allows two individuals to get to know each other without interference from the rest of the people in their lives. You know who I mean, people like his mother who thinks no woman is good enough for her son, or her big brother who is overly protective of his little sister. And let’s face it, your friends might be great company on a ladies’ night or a guys’ night out, but probably not so much when that special someone gets your pulse racing.

I suppose some of you out there are saying ‘Well, duh!’ but I am simply laying the foundation for the point I am about to make. Dating remains an important part of romantic relationships well after the ‘I dos’ are declared. That same belief is also widely accepted among relationship experts, and any of them will tell you taking dating out of a relationship is like trying to grow a garden without sunshine. It can be done, but the plants will be small and weak.

Unfortunately, life gets hectic right out of the gate and the first casualty is usually the time set aside for just the two of you, the date. Both of you have fulltime jobs, you now have two families to visit for every occasion, and by the time the first child comes along you practically have to start scheduling your own potty breaks. Before you know it, you wake up one day and wonder what the hell happened to the fun-loving spouse you married seven years ago. It definitely can’t be the person drooling on the pillow next to yours, and sporting the zombie hairdo, who passed out from sheer exhaustion last night without so much as a good night kiss. That is NOT the same person who used to make your stomach flutter with just a look.

If your relationship hasn’t gotten to that stage yet, good for you, keep date night alive and it will be easier to avoid. But, if the situation I’ve just described sounds eerily familiar then keep reading. There is still hope. All you have to do is bring back the date. The easiest way to do this is to put it in your calendar and make that time “sacred”. In other words, put your spouse first and nothing, outside of a life or death situation, interferes with date night. And I mean NOTHING!

Okay, so you’ve picked a night of the week that works for both of you and you’ve carved it in stone as a weekly recurring event in your calendar. Great! Now all you have to do is follow the rules, and don’t get your knickers in a twist, they’re easy.

Movies don’t count. You have to be facing each other and engaged in conversation. That’s fun conversation not discussions about hot topics that will most likely end up in an argument.
Date night is for the two of you AND ONLY the two of you. No friends, no kids, no relatives, and no animals that will pull your attention away from your spouse.
You have to leave the home. This is not the time to catch up on laundry, repairs around the house, or any other project you’ve been meaning to finish. Even if the date consists of going for a long scenic drive, a picnic in the park at the end of the block, or a hike along the trail through the city. As long as it’s just the two of you, it counts.
You don’t have to spend money from an already too tight budget. A long walk around the neighborhood is a perfect idea for those couples who have very little or no disposable income. Spending quality time with your spouse should never be a burden.
Turn off all electronic devises. Even if you follow all the rules listed above, if you are allowing your cell phone (that includes non-smart phones too,) your PDAs, or any other electronic devices to interfere with you giving your spouse your undivided attention, then it’s not a date. No exceptions. This needs to be a zero tolerance rule.

Remember, when you took those vows you made a commitment to put your spouse above all others, and that included your children. We all tend to forget that sometimes, but it’s imperative that we make the effort to remind ourselves just how important that promise really is. I can hear some of you arguing with me already, but the fact of the matter is, if your marriage falls apart because you neglected your partner, your family will fall apart too. Make sure your marriage becomes a survivor, not a statistic. Now, let’s make a date.

Mind Games, Deception is Key

Deception is a part of life, and as with nearly every aspect of life, it can be used for good or for evil. For instance, it brings pleasure to many people when a surprise party is planned in their honor, and deception is a necessary tool to make that enjoyable moment possible. Deception is also required when playing games like Poker, Chess, or Risk.

Now on the flip side of that coin is the kind of deception used to cheat, steal, and lie in order to gain an unfair advantage over a competitor or an adversary. Or is it unfair? After all, isn’t it said that ‘all’s fair in love and war’?

Many times the deception is impossible to avoid when matters of the heart impair your judgment. But so what if they do, the ends will justify the means…or will they? Eventually, the web of lies will take on a life of their own and bind you to a fate of their choosing. And that, is when Mind Games become dangerous…

Mind Games by Susan M. Baer

(excerpts)

Mercedes leaned forward. “…Do you recognize these documents, Dr. Carrington?”

AJ glanced at them. “They are department authorization forms…”

“Are they authorizations you signed?”

AJ took a closer look. The items listed were for his department and they looked legitimate until he saw the miscellaneous item…He never asked for miscellaneous funds. Every cent had a purpose and he made damn sure it was documented. He turned the page over and saw his signature on the bottom. His heart rate increased.

“This is a forgery. I have never requested…”

Mercedes’ expression was cold and emotionless. “Jameson claims you did.”

“…I can prove these are forgeries. I have copies of every authorization I have submitted in the five years I have been the director.”

Charles cleared his throat. “Yes, well unfortunately your office appears to be missing some documents.”

“You searched my office? Who the hell authorized that? It certainly was not me…I took an oath to care for and protect those who have put their trust in me.”

“That oath will be worthless if you are found guilty of embezzlement,” Charles said.

************

Douglas walked to the suite and felt his heart race with excitement. He unlocked the door and stepped inside. When the master key slid into the lock on Dr. Carrington’s door he nearly squealed with glee. This was almost too easy.

…A vision of AJ begging for mercy from the court after his sentence was read, made him laugh out loud.

“Find something amusing?”

Douglas dropped his keys and spun around. He saw Mercedes sitting in the large, leather, winged back chair in front of Dr. Carrington’s desk, and his heart leapt into his throat.

“What the hell are you doing here?”

She crossed her legs and twirled her foot carelessly.

“I could ask you the same thing,” she said. “Your office is quite a bit out of the way from here.”

“I am the hospital administrator. It is my job to make sure things are running as they should be.”

“I suppose that’s true…But somehow I think even your cronies would have a hard time believing you forgot…it was you who closed it down.”

He crossed his arms and leaned back against the desk. “And what about you Mercedes? How exactly do you plan to explain your presence here…?”

“I’m an interested board member, Douglas. I want to get to the truth…I am simply setting a trap for the real thief to return to the scene of the crime.” She laced her fingers together across her waist. “And it appears he has.”

Why Write Erotica? I’m Glad You Asked

I love when someone new discovers my writing. Whether it’s my books, my blog, or my other posts, for the most part their reaction is always positive. Many have questions or comments about the characters they liked the most. But, there is one question I have had only a few times that is my favorite. It has yet to be asked the same way twice, so to paraphrase, they want to know why I chose to write erotic romance rather than soft romance. Well, I’m glad you asked.

When I started writing romance I honestly didn’t intend to write erotica. I wanted to write a frilly love story about a knight in shining armor saving the fair maiden from some evil dragon. Okay, well that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point. Then after I started writing my first story I felt an overwhelming compulsion to write erotic love scenes. Not because “sex sells”, although there is no denying it does, but because so many people in this world have lost their focus, and making love has become something other than an expression of love reserved for the one who holds your heart.

Everyday I go to work with my husband, a clinical psychologist who specializes in couples counseling, and watch men and women alike come in for advice on their relationships. Some are married, some are engaged, and some are single. They all have a variety of issues to deal with and every situation is unique. But, the one issue they most commonly share is a problem with intimacy, and almost always the root of the problem is that “sex” is no longer an expression of love for one or both partners. Life has happened, and the bond that their physical connection once created has become so weak that it is barely noticeable. So, Dr. Baer pulls out his toolbox and one by one gives them different exercises they can use to repair and strengthen the bond that once held them together. Then it is up to them to decide whether or not to use his advice. Surprisingly enough, a lot decide to not make an effort.

Too often I see people end up alone because the relationship couldn’t survive the loss of intimacy. Of course, there could be no happy ending if the intimacy is never restored, and that’s where my stories come in. My hope is that through the characters I have created I can help people keep the love alive by reminding them just how much their partner means to them.

Now, for all you naysayers out there, yes, I have included erotic love scenes that were “light on the love”. But, if my characters knew all the secrets to life from the start, what would be the point of the story? My hope is that eventually my readers can relate to at least one of my characters or storylines and it will help them see their own life from a more objective point of view. Then maybe we can all enjoy a new trend that will bring love back to the forefront of our relationships. And that’s why I write erotic romance.

Happy reading!

Mind Games, Where Reality and Fantasy Become One

Dreams are a part of life, not just the kind we fashion with purpose and intent in our waking hours, but the fanciful kind we wander through as we sleep away the night. The ones where we forget all about reality, and the laws of the real world no longer exist. We all have them, both good and bad, and sometimes they haunt us for a while, which can lead us to wonder whether they hold any significance in our lives.

Most people have a set opinion about dreams. Some say they are meaningless, a hodgepodge of the day’s events that the mind is clearing away. Others say they are premonitions, or clues to unlock mysteries we have encountered. In fact, my grandmother had a book that contained dream symbols with corresponding numbers she used to pick her lottery tickets. Some people with deep feelings of faith believe loved ones use them to reach beyond the grave to communicate with those they left behind. Whether you subscribe to one of these theories or have one of you own the fact that dreams have interested and fascinated people for generations is undeniable.

Many experts have studied the meaning of dreams for centuries and published their theories for the purpose of higher learning. One such expert, Sigmund Freud, has said, “Dreams are the royal road to the unconscious.” A sort of path to the part of the mind that is locked away from the conscious. I find this theory to be the most intriguing. But, if this were true, why not just come out with it? Why all the mystery and symbols? Perhaps it is because we secretly enjoy the challenge of playing some tantalizing Mind Games

Warning: The following excerpt may not be suitable for young readers.

Mind Games by Susan M. Baer

Chapter 3

AJ walked into his office and found Samantha sitting in his chair. She was dressed in a low cut, short, red dress. Her gentle curves were displayed beautifully in the sexy satin. The dress was familiar, he’d seen it before.

He walked behind his desk and reached across her body to set his briefcase down in front of her. He brought his hand back and brushed her hair from her neck.

She turned her head into his palm and whispered, “Do you ever think about me?”

He spun the chair around and yanked her to her feet. He swept his desk clean in one stroke and pushed her to her back. He covered her with his body and kissed her with a feeling of desperation.

She moaned then pushed at his shoulders and broke the kiss.

“Do you like what you see?”

A flash of red caught his eye and he looked at his phone. Suzanne’s line was flashing with an incoming call. AJ realized the position he was in and jumped to his feet. He wiped Samantha’s lipstick from his mouth with the back of his hand and fought to catch his breath. He put more space between them and clumsily pointed at her.

“That dress is not appropriate for this office.” He crossed his arms over his chest and watched her closely.

She rose slowly and sensuously off his desk. She walked around it, her fingertips glided along the polished wood. She bit her bottom lip and smiled coyly.

“Is it really the dress you object to or is it me you don’t want in your life?”

He closed his eyes and groaned. The need to possess her, cover her with his body and thrust into her softness was strong. But he couldn’t do that here…could he? What if Suzanne walked in?

His heartbeat thundered in his ears. He swallowed hard and opened his eyes. Samantha stood close to him and he could feel the cool satin of her dress as the material settled on the fine sprinkling of hair on his torso. His shirt hung open and when he gasped in surprise his chest pressed against her breasts. He took a step back and stopped abruptly when his back hit the wall behind him.

She ran the tips of her fingers along the neckline of her dress and toyed with the material where the two sides met between her breasts. She tipped her head to the side, a pouty frown on her lips.

He let his gaze roam her body before he looked at her eyes. They flashed with a familiar spark. He’d seen that look before. She was challenging him.

“What I do or do not like is not the point,” he said. He pulled the sides of his shirt together and fastened the button at his waist. “You do not work for me and that dress belongs somewhere other than my office.”

“I think it’s exactly what your office needs.” She ran a glossy red fingernail along his jaw. “Maybe if you weren’t afraid to admit it, you’d see I’m exactly what you need in your life.”

She pressed her body to his and tipped her head up.

He could feel her warm breath on his neck and waited for her to kiss the vein he could feel pulsing in his throat. He clenched his jaw and willed her to bite him.

She stepped to his right side and whispered, “You know you want me. It’s time to admit it.”

He grabbed her hand and brought her palm to his lips. He licked her warm skin and turned around to follow her.

Samantha spun and her hair turned dark as it swayed across her face. Her features blurred and when he blinked his stomach knotted. It wasn’t Samantha in that damned red dress, it was Jackie.

She was just as he remembered her. Dark, wavy, long hair, full figure and lips so inviting arousal shot through him like a lightning bolt.

Her expression changed and his heart constricted. The look on her beautiful face was tortured and full of pain.

Suddenly, Jackie was standing a few feet away under the oak tree. The wind was blowing her hair wildly as the leaves stirred around her.

‘I thought you wanted me. Why did you make me come here?’

The howl of the wind became deafening and he struggled to hear her voice. A tear ran down her face and disappeared under her chin.

AJ tried to move but he was paralyzed. The more he struggled the more his heart ached. He had to reach her. He needed to hold her, to ease the emptiness consuming him.

The tear reappeared and rolled down her neck. Inch by inch it made its way down her silky smooth skin until it was nestled in her generous cleavage. The image made him dizzy with desire. He tried to move his arm, to brush the backs of his fingers along her cheek, but he still couldn’t move.

She turned around. The wind tugged at her long hair and his vision blurred.

‘Jackie! Don’t leave me!’

The distance between them was growing, he was losing her.

‘NO!’

He finally broke free from his paralysis and lunged for her, but Jackie faded from his view and he stumbled forward, falling into darkness

Amorous, Lincoln Series Book I, A Journey of Love

What a busy weekend! Holy cow! My hero (aka my husband, Robert) and I had planned a nice quiet weekend to get some projects done around the house. But much to our surprise we did everything BUT get the house in order. As odd as it may sound, we thought it would be more fun to do things like, go to Rosie’s annual 4th of July BBQ instead of clear out that dusty pile of boxes in the corner of the bedroom. LOL!

In spite of the festivities of the holiday, I did manage to steal a few hours to work on Mind Games, The Lincoln Series Book II. I plan to have it ready to go by spring (maybe sooner) and in the meantime I will have a short story or two for you all to read to keep you posted on the lives of the residents of Lincoln.

I truly hope you all are enjoying Amorous, Book I that was released last week. I am looking forward to reading the reviews you are all going to write (hint, hint.) Seriously, I am genuinely interested in hearing what you think. I feel like a first time mom who is presenting her newborn, Amorous, to the world and hoping everyone loves my child as much as I do.

Amorous was a labor of love, as I have said before, but it is also a journey of love. One that many of us have traveled. Everyone has fears and that includes strong women, too. Marie believes in her ability to be anything she wants and proves it by making herself indispensable to the world renowned Dr. AJ Carrington. But when it comes to intimacy, she feels less than worthy of the love of a good man.

Come along on her journey as Amorous tells her tale of love’s most important lesson. Everyone is worthy of love, all you need is the courage to believe.

Get your copy of Amorous today!
