Before Katie Cook's television career started in 2001, her band Reno released an album with Curb Records. Promoting the album took her on the road for long stretches of time. These often boring road trips mixed with Katie's wild imagination was Little Big Benny’s genesis. It started with the idea that while we may be small in the grand cosmic scheme of things, we also have a universe within as well, which makes us absolutely giant at the same time. Katie dreamed of creating a character that could explore ideas like this while maintaining a sense humor, like the children’s entertainment she grew up with offered. When Katie became a mother herself, she knew it was time to take this half baked idea and develop into a full fledged children's bo

When I get hit with ideas, I try really hard to follow that energy and drop everything I am doing and make time to write. If the dishes pile up or the laundry goes days without getting done, that's okay with me. I know the creative streak will dry up eventually and I will get back to doing those things. I am not great at just sitting down and turning it on. With the way i work, I don't really experience writer's block all that much. I just wait for the ideas to start flowing again and get back to work when they do. I find I always have more ideas than I know what to do with so I think even if I had a deadline I would be okay. I never know where the inspiration is going to come from, but anything little thing can trigger an idea. It could be a song on the radio, or watching kids playing on a playground. I just try really hard to be open and let it all flow in and I know something will spark me back up before long! I guess I just have faith that even when nothing is happening, it won't be long before I am overflowing again with ideas so I don't stress too much about it. (less)

I would love to get to a point where I can do it full time. As a writer, you can create any world you want. The only limitation is your own imagination. I love sharing my books with young readers and having them ask me questions about all the characters; it makes me feel like my characters are real. They are real to me, and seeing them through children's eyes, breathes even more life into them. (less)
