MK Sauer lives in Boulder, Colorado where she owns a coffee shop and spends entirely too many hours of the day caffeinated. She received a degree in Russian Literature from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Believing that everyone should have at least one party trick, she has finally decided that hers is talking about Stalin for three hours straight. Her favorite RPG character trope is the wily thief who looks like a cross between Indiana Jones and Xena and is somehow afraid of looking up. She developed an obsession with vampires at the age of nine because of her mother's flat-out refusal to allow her to watch Interview with a Vampire. At the tender age of 13, when she was exposed to Russian Literature--mainly Dostoevsky, Gogol, and Bu ...more

Basically, I read all of the Song of Ice and Fire books, a history of England to 1400, went to sleep, then listened to some Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and VOILA--a new novel.

It's my first try at a high fantasy political thriller. I have a feeling it'll be more fantasy than anything else. (less)

A Post about Negativity and Writing

I received a lovely comment from Beatrice (hi Beatrice!) asking for some writing advice / general thoughts about the process of being a writer.

Beatrice writes:

How often do you work, how often do you write? I find it hard to work a job and also find the time to write.

This is a doozy of a question! I work about 40+ hours a week, including my actual time working shifts at the coffee shop, and the

Mikhail Bulgakov
“But would you kindly ponder this question: What would your good do if
evil didn't exist, and what would the earth look like if all the shadows
disappeared? After all, shadows are cast by things and people. Here is the
shadow of my sword. But shadows also come from trees and living beings.
Do you want to strip the earth of all trees and living things just because
of your fantasy of enjoying naked light? You're stupid.”
Mikhail Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita

Victor Pelevin
“Reading is human contact, and the range of our human contacts is what makes us what we are. Just imagine you live the life of a long-distance truck driver. The books that you read are like the travelers you take into your cab. If you give lifts to people who are cultured and profound, you'll learn a lot from them. If you pick up fools, you'll turn into a fool yourself.”
Victor Pelevin, The Sacred Book of the Werewolf
