There is something there, tenuous and undefined, but I can feel it, and I let it touch something inside of me, and follow where it leads. Sometimes ideas come as I'm drifting off to sleep, or just waking up. Perhaps being in that hazy in-between state allows ideas to emerge from my subconscious. Creativity is an odd and wonderful thing, and I sometimes find myself pleasantly surprised at what I've written, and I wonder "Where did that come from?" Certain instrumental music stirs me emotionally and I like to have it on when I'm writing. Movies that make me feel deeply about the human condition can inspire, and reading well-written books and poetry either inspires me to reach for more in my own writing or makes me feel quitting because I know I'll never reach the level of mastery of what I've just read.(less)

“They say love is blind, but I say it has a special kind of magic that sees past armor and wounds, finding the longing heart within.”

“DUCK VISIT

I visited some ducks today
down by the riverside.
They quickly waddled up to see
what food I might provide.

Some seeds for them
and Brie for me,
the ducks and I are snackers.
Golly gee, it’s plain to see
that I love cheese and quackers.”

“MILLY O’MALLEY

Milly O’Malley from Kalamazoo
has a collection of horrible shoes.

Shoes that look ugly,
shoes that feel bad.
Shoes guaranteed
to make everyone mad.

Shoes that will trip you,
shoes that will pinch.
Shoes that refuse
to move even one inch.

It won’t surprise you
to hear me say
that Milly O’Malley
goes barefoot all day.”

“My Undeniable Miracle

I don't know why things happen the way they do—why so much of our lives have been spent in heartache and disappointment. Wrong timing. The wrong people. Unhappy situations. Not being our best and truest selves.

What I do know is that in you, I have finally found all I never dared dream I could deserve or have—the kind of love that is rare. Being known in a way that touches the deepest parts of me. Accepted in a way that blows my mind.

In you, the love I have always desired to give now has a place to call home. I have been a skeptic, but you are my undeniable miracle. The questions don't matter anymore. We have finally found each other, and that is enough.”

“The Ache That Would Not Leave

Behind the hum and routine of daily living, there lay a persistent and wild longing for something she could not easily put into words. It felt like impulsive adventures and watching the sun rise over unfamiliar mountains, or coffee in a street café, set to the background music of a foreign language. It was the smell of the ocean, with dizzying seagulls whirling in a cobalt sky; exotic foods and strange faces, in a city where no one knew her name. She wanted secrets whispered at midnight, and road trips without a map, but most of all, she ached for someone who desired to explore the mysteries that lay sleeping within her. The truly heartbreaking part was that she could feel the remaining days of her life falling away, like leaves from an autumn tree, but still this mysterious person who held the key to unlock her secrets did not arrive; they were missing, and she knew not where to find them.”
John Mark Green

“I’ll steal wild honey for your lips,
gather flowers to crown your head,
hide sunlight in your heart
for days of rain and thunder.”
John Mark Green, The Light You Need II: Romantic Love Poetry

“When night has fallen so hard
and you just can’t find your way,
follow the sound of my voice
back to the shelter of my arms.

When the cruelty of this world
blinds you to all your beauty,
see yourself through my eyes
and witness your magnificence.

When your heart lies broken
in a thousand shattered pieces,
let me gather all of them up,
and mend them with my love.”
John Mark Green, The Light You Need II: Romantic Love Poetry

“Grief is the language that love speaks after loss.”
