Freshman year at Yale, I decided to write the feminist version of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics when I turned 50. After reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance the summer after my first year at Harvard Law School, I decided I’d write my ethical treatise in the form of speculative fiction stories.

I practiced corporate law, especially competition law, full time for twenty-five years. Simultaneously, I managed a small horse farm, trained and showed first in jumpers and then in dressage, bore and loved two children, and continued to read science fiction obsessively.

In the former, I would upgrade my body to Culture standards, hire a Knife for protection, debate philosophy with tolerant Minds, and try on alien bodies to immerse myself in alien cultures. In the latter, I'd work to create a Guild for Defectives from the Flock, and spend my credit at the Church of the Thinking Hedonist. (less)

I wanted to understand him better, and I wanted to show those %&**&%s that people who are different can be heroes, too.
I also felt I needed to write a YA novel because the main problem with my writing was was that I shoved too many ideas into too little space. I hoped (and thank goodness it worked!) that if I thought about writing for teens, I would unbundle the questions I wanted to write about, simplifying my style.
Finally, I was very angry at the zoning board in my town. :)(less)

Real Laplaine’s Foray into the Big Questions

Was it God, the Big Bang, or something else? Are we the makers of our own destiny or someone/something else? Why does evil exist? Real LaPlaine’s novel “Earth Escape” suggests one novel answer: SPOILER

“we” are the collective authors of the universe we know, created to EXPERIENCE all that we can conceive.  Obviously, we can conceive evil, and juxtaposition of “good” and “bad” experiences enrich th

Rudy Simone
“If a guy can‘t handle it when you talk about quantum physics, Manga, or Dungeons and Dragons, then he probably isn‘t the guy for you. If he gets embarrassed by your bluntness, you‘re probably not a good match. If he doesn‘t get your jokes, references, etc., then do you really want to pursue it? We tend to feel flawed and want to change ourselves to be accepted. We are good mimics and we think that we can mimic being the kind of girl that guys will like. By all means work on yourself, but most important, be yourself.”
