Within the Jane Austen Universe I find the complex relationship between Fanny Price and Edmund Bertram in "Mansfield Park" to be very satisfying and revealing. Strangely the Harry Potter/Hermionie Granger/Ron Weasley triumverate is compelling...even though we know that Ginny W is the final 4th component. The broken relationship between George Smiley (Tinker-Tailor-Soldier-Spy) and his wife is essential to understanding the depths behind the placid exterior of the great spymaster. What I do enjoy are the new dynamics explored by JAFF authors who pair the secondary characters in P&P in different and more exciting manners. Popular is Colonel Fitzwilliam and Kitty (although I did marry him off to Lydia in one story).(less)

New Work Coming to a Close

I have been writing...yes...writing! With 100,000 words locked in, I am three scenes (Wickham's comeupance, the Proposal, and the Epilogue) from the end. Then off to edits!

This is a scene from the debate over the Slave Trade Abolishment Bill in the British House of Commons on February 23, 1807. Bennet has already spoken, having "returned unexpectedly" to the House after being struck by a carriage Read more of this blog post »

“The growing social consciousness of the Industrial Revolution (1750-1850) can be found throughout the Austen Universe. While the Lady wrote about the gentry, she, none-the-less, was speaking to the human condition. Class is an imaginary distinction conferring no better manners on the “haves” and no lesser nobility on the “have-nots” and that the deepest human emotions are universal.”

“The most painful state of being is remembering the future, particularly the one you'll never have.”
Søren Kierkegaard

“Of all the events leading up to the departure for the shore, though, was one that had been months in the making. The two souls in question had been united at first through their mutual love for a lost woman. They soon discovered that she was but the medium through which the universe once again exercised its peculiar ability to match those destined to be so linked." The Exile (2017)
