Memoir that reads like a novel. This was so interesting and inspiring. I did have a few moments in this book where I felt oddly jealous of Rideout (like, he's doing everything on earth to try to wreck his life and he's still rich and smart and somewh ...more

How Not to Die by Michael Greger
"This book has me torn. It contains so much good... and yet, it has so many problems. It's an important read for everyone... but also misleading. Overall, I learned a lot from it... but also ended up more confused than ever.

Let me break it down.

Walk with Weight by Michael Easter

I love the concept of walking with weight and enjoyed this book. It was, at times, too simplistic and also echoed his other work at the beginning and probably in a few other places as well. (I got the idea that it was trying to bulk itself out becaus ...more

My son would kill me if I didn't give this five stars. He loved it and got me to read it. I really enjoyed it too (though at the 3/4 mark it goes a little slow, which is unusual). The prose is better than usual in genre fiction and the world building ...more

“Seven bucks. The price of a soul. Or a double quarter pounder with cheese.”
Jean Knight Pace, Pulse: A Paramedic's Walk Along the Lines of Life and Death

“Our next call is a pediatric psych. Depressing, every one. And depressingly frequent.”
Jean Knight Pace, Pulse: A Paramedic's Walk Along the Lines of Life and Death

“Sometimes I just want people to vomit into the bag, to use their perfectly capable legs, to call their doctor during the day, to have appropriate equipment or skills for falls, to live in assisted care facilities if they always need assisted care, to go to bed at night, to stay off drugs, to stop cussing at strangers, to stay in when it rains, and—for the love of all that draws breath—to keep their clothes on. Is that too much to ask?”
