I started writing with a short story Dinosaur and the Cockroach. This title was intended to contrast the old (unable to adapt) with the new (good at adapting). It was about the changing nature of leaders and leadership type that a society needs as society changes with the times. That was why it was described as a political parody. This story won a prize at a national competition.

After that I moved on to write about gender politics (King's Madness), the role of sex in romance (Kent Ridge Capers), marital infidelity (Sex Lies and Videotape).

My current passion is my two new novels Escape to Temasek (R@TK #1) and Fall of Singapura (R@TK #2). They arose out of my struggle against what I learnt in primary school, that Singapore has no history, or

That's the best thing about being a writer. When an idea comes, the story flows, the scenes flash by. I day dream about it when I wake up, and again just before I fall asleep. I get so excited by it that I just have to put pen to paper until the story is all done. And after that, I get to see others read to share the pleasure. Nothing can beat the fun of being a writer.(less)

My research for Fall of Singapura has also given me another idea for a new documentary film. At the moment I am still in the midst of my feasibility study. It will be about the ancient name for Singapore. The details must be kept a secret until the project is completed. (less)

Writing Journey

I grew up believing that Singapore history starts with Sir Stamford Raffles. That is the official narrative. But I think there is more than meets the eye. There is a hidden history.

My writing journey started with a short story : Dinosaur and the Cockroach -- a metaphor for the evolution of politics and leadership approach in Singapore, written at a time when communism was on its death throes and Read more of this blog post »

“If you want to know why the human primate behaves the way it does, I can easily explain:

1. human life span
2. human physiology at each stage of life="hormones"
3. our current state of evolution (still primitive in many ways).

Humans are the only species on earth aware of their own deaths. They aren't here for long so they are very concerned with the quality of their lives more so than the quality of the lives that will come after them. It is our life spans that trap us, make us truly incapable of long-term decisions which would require sacrifice we as a species are not willing to make.

Hormones: at each life stage, we are influenced heavily by hormones-raging levels in the young male or not, descending in the middle aged man or woman. Hormones also influence our behavior.

Lastly, we are not out of the oven yet as far as evolution goes, still prone to settle our differences through primitive means--greed and violence.

Here is a thought question for you-how would things differ if the average human could expect to live 200 years instead of 70+-?”
