5 Must-read Fiction Books Set in the Future

From near to far and everything in between, fiction set in the future always intrigues. As a science fiction author, I love exploring unfamiliar societies, advanced technologies, and the consequences of time. Whether they’re standalone novels or series-starting stories, I’m constantly reading books set in the future—for inspiration, yes, but primarily for sheer enjoyment. In no particular order, my favorite future fiction books are listed below.

If you love post-apocalyptic stories and undergroun...

20 Books to Make You a Better Person in 2020

Oh, January, the magical time of year that inspires change—when you vow to get six-pack abs before pool season, you promise to stop binge-drinking, and you set a goal to read more books because some guy on the internet said that reading is good for you. You start the year with so much hope and optimism, ready to become the person you’ve always wanted to be—but then life happens. You can’t find parking because the gym is overcrowded, you can’t say no to the birthday girl at bottomless mimosa...

My New Decade Resolution | 2020

At the end of 2009, my resolution for the coming year was fairly simple. “I want to make my life excellent,” I said to the camera, sitting there well after midnight at an IHOP. At twenty years old, I had a limitless supply of optimism pumping through my veins. I was woefully cocky, endlessly energetic, unceasingly hopeful—and incredibly selfish. I still am, more often than I’d like to be, but I’m working on it.

By definition, New Year’s resolutions are about yourself. According to Wikipedia,...

19 Mentally Stimulating Books to Read in 2019

I set a goal at the beginning of the year to read 52 books in 2018, and I'm happy to say that I actually did it! This is the most books I've ever read in a single calendar year, and (not surprisingly) many more than the average American reads yearly. According to research done by PEW:

"Overall, Americans read an average (mean) of 12 books per year, while the typical (median) American has read four books in the past 12 months."

That's an admirable amount of reading, but I know many people who re...

Author Interviews Himself About His Book

As a writer of fiction, I often catch myself talking to myself.

No you don't, Andy.

I'm doing it right now!

Whatever you say, man. Can we get a poke bowl? I'm famished.

We can eat after this blog post.

Fine, you're paying though.

Obviously. Anyway, since I talk to myself so often, I thought it might be fitting to interview myself.

About what?

About my novel, The Last Safe Place.

That sounds mildly interesting. Do you want to ask the questions, or should I?

Go for it.

I already know all the answers, t...

The Last Safe Place - Chapter 9

Speed/Caution

The three remaining crew members of Starling II floated in grim silence, Mara’s soft weeping the only sound louder than the hum of the ship’s operational systems. Tears drifted from her face to form silvery constellations around her as she wiped the skin below her spectacles. The gravity of their decision revealed itself in each of their postures. Kapp let his forehead sink into his hands while Jesse tried to massage the sleep out of his legs. His body had trouble adjusting to th...

The Last Safe Place - Chapter 8

Three Legged Chair

After Lana left with the leaked photos, Asher moved from the booth to the bar to throttle his budding anxiety with a cocktail or five. As he drank, the patronage of the downtown establishment, scant to begin with, shrank until he and the bartender were the only occupants in the dimly lit space. With his forehead in his hands, he slouched forward, staring at the muddled mint leaves floating in the last half of his mojito.

“You okay, hun?”

Asher looked up at the bartender. He co...
