Darin C. Brown Darin C. Brown grew up in upstate New York, the youngest of seven children. After fourteen years of higher education, including a master’s degree and two doctorates, he saved lives as an ER physician in New Hampshire and Maine for over twenty years. Darin started writing local talent shows including the White Mountain Waldorf School’s annual coffee house and the Memorial Hospital Talent Show before moving on to novels. The Master of Perceptions Series, his primary fiction work, is an extensive series documenting the life of Hunter Miller, a superhero with a unique ability. It remains a work-in-progress, with fifteen books planned. He writes and directs a local comedy event, the Josh and Darin Variety Show, and plays piano wit ...more

I try to conceptualize storyboard plot lines and scenes first, but even when I know where the story is headed, sometimes I can't get there. I just stop, and do anything else until that moment when the words start flowing. The trick to this system-- once you get started, keep going!(less)

I love reading books where the author clearly created a giant map before starting, and all of the pieces came together at the end. When I write, I strive to make my readers say, "Wow, that was cool!" and I love it when they do!(less)

“I swam through the thick, smelly, greyish ocean of pressure toward nowhere.”
Darin C. Brown, The Taste of Despair

“Well, one of the kids from school called me stupid because I didn’t catch the football,” I said.
“Was this kid named Albert?” Mom asked.
“No, it was Kenny.”
“Listen. Unless Albert Einstein is at your school, you’re the smartest one there. Look how fast you solved the Rubik’s cube. I bet none of your classmates can even solve it at all, let alone in under a minute. And… what’s 316 times 128?”
I paused for a moment. “40,448.”
“I guarantee that nobody in your school can do that either. Stupid? Forget about it.”
Darin C. Brown, The Taste of Despair

“My soul lightened as I realized I could help her. I rolled her body flat, like Grandpa taught me. I swept my finger inside her cold mouth to make sure her breathing passage was open, and I placed my mouth on hers, carefully pinching her nose, and breathed life into her lungs.
Betsy stirred, sputtered a cough, and opened her eyes.
“Now you kiss me?” she said, so weakly I could barely hear her.”
