Jamie Sumner is the author of the critically-acclaimed middle-grade novels, Roll with It, Tune It Out, and One Kid's Trash. Her forth middle-grade novel The Summer of June hits shelves on May 31st, 2022 with Atheneum Books for Young Readers. She is also the author of the nonfiction parenting books, Eat, Sleep, Save the World and Unbound.

When I began to look at kindergarten for him, we would tour the libraries of the schools and I couldn't help but notice that there weren't any books with kids on the cover who looked like him. I did not want him growing up thinking he was alone, that there were no other people who understood how he lived and the beauty of it.

ROLL WITH IT is for him and all the other kids with disabilities who deserve to see themselves in the center of a story, just as they are the center and star of their own lives.(less)

There's a character, Coralee, who dreams of being a famous singer. It's all she's ever wanted and she'd give anything to get it. In TUNE IT OUT, I thought...what if you had the talent to be famous, but not the desire? What if you weren't wired for that kind of life but everyone important to you told you it's your destiny? How would someone navigate that kind of decision while also learning who they are as a person? That's how Lou in TUNE IT OUT came to be!(less)

I'm so glad you loved Tune It Out! I never say never when it comes to book ideas--so maybe more of Lou's story should get told. I think a graphic novel of the original would also be fun.
