George M. Johnson writes stories of positive change based on his social justice work over 30 years, for which he received the Y.M.C.A. Peace Medal in 2019. He grew up in Waterdown, Ontario, and in 1991 moved to Kamloops, B.C., where he is Professor of creative writing and literature in the Literatures, Languages, and Performing Arts Department at Thompson Rivers University. His comedy Still Life With Nudes, about seniors who stage a sit-in at an art gallery won several awards, including the Ottawa Little Theatre’s Gladys Cameron Watt Award and the Regina Little Theatre’s National Playwriting Competition. I keep various notebooks, one for children's writing, one for plays, screenplays, etc., so that when I am stuck I go to one of these notebooks for ideas that I have recorded. There is nothing like creating something from a white page. You never know exactly where your ideas will go, so you start writing to see. Also, I love that you keep your own hours and can work as much or as little as you want. Sometimes I work on a piece almost obsessively and at other times I don't write much for weeks. I do feel best, though, when I am engaged on a piece.(less)
