I listen to audiobooks. I listen to podcasts and the news. I watch movies and television and plays. They're all stories and equally valid. I don't think there's a hierarchy, as in some are more important than others. I get inspiration from hearing good stories no matter what their form. Sometimes, a good story will unlock something that I'm working on - even if what I'm working on has seemingly nothing to do with what I've just read or heard. Other times, a question or a memory will pop into my head and that will lead to a new idea.

I've never forgotten the feeling I had standing inside it. Maybe it was just in my imagination, but there was a feeling in that house that I'd never experienced before. Fast forward a number of years and I decided to try NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). I didn't know what to write about and then imagined four young teenaged girls standing in front of an abandoned house, trying to convince themselves to go in. The rest of the story unfolded from there.(less)

“Why is it that some people -- mainly women, my own age-- feel the need to patronize me? It usually happens with the ones who are mothers. It's like my not having kids, not being married and now not having a job keeps me in some kind of childish state in their minds.”
Jennifer Fawcett, Beneath the Stairs

“Eddie Ward. A name my family never says. Eddie Ward has been rotting in a prison cell for over thirty years, but despite being locked away, his name unspoken, he is still with us, while each year my mother fades further into the past.”
Jennifer Fawcett, Keep This for Me: A Novel

“If I was going to hide something. I'd put it with the underwear," Lori said
"The dirty underwear. Then no one would want to touch it."
You keep dirty underwear in your dresser? Clair thought but didn't say.”
Jennifer Fawcett, Beneath the Stairs
