I am an author, teacher and researcher. I have authored/co-authored four psychology textbooks for schools, and my most recent book ‘Psychology in the Classroom’ (with Marc Smith) is an engaging and accessible guide to applying psychological concepts to teaching - from memory to mindset! I'm currently working on an evidence-based guide to using the psychology of creativity (for writers, artists, researchers, or anyone else who does creative work). I'm also working on two further books for teachers, a primer on classic psychological research, and a creative non-fiction work about memory. I live on the west coast of Scotland with my family and dog, and I work at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, Scotland). Twitter - @JW_Firth ...more

I think the main reason is that I usually have a couple of projects on the go, and I work on whichever one I am more in the mood for (or the one that has the closest deadline).(less)

They developed my writing skills and helped me to develop good working relationships with publishers. After having done my textbooks, I never seemed to be short of options for future books and have been able to expand into other genres.(less)

Lewis Grassic Gibbon
“So that was Chris and her reading and schooling, two Chrisses there were that fought for her heart and tormented her. You hated the land and the coarse speak of the folk and learning was brave and fine one day; and the next you'd waken with the peewits crying across the hills, deep and deep, crying in the heart of you and the smell of the earth in your face, almost you'd cry for that, the beauty of it and the sweetness of the Scottish land and skies.”

Haile Selassie I
“Education develops the intellect; and the intellect distinguishes man from other creatures. It is education that enables man to harness nature and utilize her resources for the well-being and improvement of his life. The key for the betterment and completeness of modern living is education. But, ' Man cannot live by bread alone '. Man, after all, is also composed of intellect and soul. Therefore, education in general, and higher education in particular, must aim to provide, beyond the physical, food for the intellect and soul. That education which ignores man's intrinsic nature, and neglects his intellect and reasoning power can not be considered true education.”
