I write speculative fiction and essays that use anthropology to explore how people and societies can transform toward more just, cooperative futures.

Through dystopian science fiction, dark fantasy horror, and cultural criticism, my work examines power, trauma, resistance, and the stories we tell about who we can become.

In Episode 11 we discuss the powerful themes in R.F. Kuang’s Babel and share our critique of Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein. We explore Babel’s unique magic system rooted in language and translation, the complex relationships between its characters, and the book’s sharp examination of colonialism, resistance, and identity.

Michael’s Recent Updates

Weave World by Clive Barker
“Nothing ever begins.
There is no first moment; no single word or place from which this or any story springs.
The threads can always be traced back to some earlier tale, and the tales that preceded that; though as the narrator's voice recedes the connections will seem to grow more tenuous, for each age will want the tale told as if it were of its own making.”

A very useful entry into an informed leftist approach to the world, or if you just want to understand why capitalism is inherently oppressive.

Outstanding. If you love the Princess Bride, you will love this book. It's fun, whimsical and still manages to deal with complex character change. Highly recommend.

Second read with my 11 year old and he loved it just as much.

“No wonder it seems like someone shit in his cereal.”
Michael Kilman, Upon Stilted Cities: The Winds of Change

“It has gone nowhere, you have gone somewhere. We are all nowhere until we go somewhere. Your mind is full again, but not because it is empty, you only think it is full.”
Michael Kilman, Upon Stilted Cities: The Battle for Langeles

“Mimi, all shadows are cast by light. There is a moment, a chance, when you face your greatest darkness, that you can turn, just a little bit, and trace the source of the shadow unto its origin. It is in those moments you have the chance to understand something about yourself and about the world that you may have never seen before. The darkness of your past is an opportunity. You are not the things that have happened to you. You are not your talents or your weakness, you are what you choose to be. There is no shadow you can cast that love, friendship, and kindness cannot overcome.”
Michael Kilman, Mimi of the Nowhere

“Luxury always comes at someone else’s expense. One of the many advantages of civilization is that one doesn’t generally have to see that, if one doesn’t wish. You’re free to enjoy its benefits without troubling your conscience.”
Ann Leckie, Ancillary Justice

“Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
George Orwell, 1984

“They were beaten to start with. They were beaten when they took them from their farms and put them in the army. That is why the peasant has wisdom, because he is defeated from the start. Put him in power and see how wise he is.”
Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms

“The less you eat, drink and read books; the less you go to the theatre, the dance hall, the public house; the less you think, love, theorize, sing, paint, fence, etc., the more you save-the greater becomes your treasure which neither moths nor dust will devour-your capital. The less you are, the more you have; the less you express your own life, the greater is your alienated life-the greater is the store of your estranged being.”
Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels

“Evil turned out not to be a grand thing. Not sneering Emperors with their world-conquering designs. Not cackling demons plotting in the darkness beyond the world. It was small men with their small acts and their small reasons. It was selfishness and carelessness and waste. It was bad luck, incompetence, and stupidity. It was violence divorced from conscience or consequence. It was high ideals, even, and low methods.”
Joe Abercrombie, Red Country
