Whether it was doodling in class or writing and illustrating her own version of fairy tales, color pencil artist Rachael Koppendrayer has always loved to draw. In addition to creating her own artwork and participating in art fairs around Minnesota, she is the illustrator of Isaac’s Ice Cream Tree, a children’s book by author Angela Henderson. When not drawing, Rachael keeps busy with crazy sewing commissions for her friends, polishing her piano skills, and writing her own stories, including a contest-winning short story published with Splickety Flash Fiction.

Dala Horse Serenade Drawing Progression

Dala horses have a very traditional style as a rule, but that’s not to say painters of Dala horses don’t have fun trying new things now and then. There are some beautiful Dala horses painted in only shades of black, white, and gray, with elegant kurbits (rosemaling) designs on the body. So with a more Norwegian-themed drawing–Norwegian Fjord horses, Hardanger fiddle, mountains, and a glimmer of an

Rachael Rachael said: " Why I didn't read this story a year ago is beyond me. I love the author's voice, especially the humor that colors it. It's quirky, fun, and romantic, just like I've come to expect from the author, while still tugging the heartstrings. I love that she ...more "

My absolute favorite Julie Klassen books are the more suspenseful, Gothic stories like The Tutor's Daughter and The Secret of Pembrooke Park, so I was happy to see her return to that style! I wouldn't have minded even if the Gothic-ness had been ampe ...more

I enjoyed this (presumably) first book in the series. It doesn't end on a cliffhanger, but there's quite a bit that is nowhere near concluded by the end. It has the feel of a family saga. I would be interested to see where the story goes from here! ...more

I enjoyed the story; the suspenseful, seafaring story was a nice change from the basic Regency drawing room drama. I do think the romance came too quickly and too easily; given the intense trauma she had endured, I would have preferred a much more gr ...more

Excellent as always. The end reminded me of a film I won't name (as anyone who has seen it would know the spoiler implied), but even being familiar with the film, I didn't expect the same twist ending here! I enjoy being surprised like that, especial ...more

“No matter how many precautions we take, none of us are truly in control. Only God can claim that kind of authority. All we can do is use the good sense he provides and trust him to guide us.”
Karen Witemeyer, Short-Straw Bride

Laura Frantz
“I've been thinking of something your father said - that the true measure of love is what one is willing to give up for it. He was talking about freedom - fighting for liberty. But I believe 'tis the same for love as war.”
Laura Frantz, The Colonel's Lady

Serena B. Miller
“When I say I will never leave you nor forsake you, I am not making up some white man's words that mean nothing, I am repeating holy, sacred words that are in that book. Those words have power. I want to teach you the power of those words. For me to ignore my Holy Scriptures and walk away from you, or to take a child from you as your father did your mother, would mean to me that I had lied to my God. I would accept death before I would leave you after making such a holy promise.”
Serena B. Miller, Under a Blackberry Moon

Ralph Waldo Emerson
“What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Mary Connealy
“The decent, strong person had to do decent, strong things like love unlovable people and keep peace even when it wasn't easy.”
Mary Connealy, Doctor in Petticoats
