| This series is SUCH an uncomfy read for me. But I do love it. Even if it makes me ranty. I think the last time I read a romance with such strong sociological underpinnings was Axel's Pup. As firmly as Adhara established that foundation, and their use ...more | |

“In those days Cheboygan was already something of a resort town, although Milo didn’t realize this fact until he was older. For most of his childhood, he knew only the deep woods that ran behind their property—350 acres of sugar maple, beech, and evergreen that had managed to remain unlogged during the huge timber harvests that had denuded much of the rest of the state. He spent a good part of his days inside this forest. The soil there was padded with a layer of decaying leaves and needles whose scents mingled to form a cool spice in his nose. He didn’t notice the smell when he was in it so much as feel its absence when he wasn’t. School, home, any building he had to spend time in—they all left him with the feeling that something had been cleaned away.”

“The baby closed its mouth, staring at him with hope and small hiccups.
“Jesus,” he said. He lay down on the bed, pulling the pillow under his head, and drew the whole bundle of coat, shawl and infant up against his shirt. A tiny hand closed tight on the lace. One sob erupted, and then changed midbreath to a soft sigh.
Women, he thought sardonically, sinking in the bedclothes, with sleep revolving and closing in his head. He moved one finger, feeling a cheek as soft as down.
What’s your name?
Ask the girl. Remember that…
Maddy…
It was wrong. I must leave thee now.
Don’t cry. Don’t cry, little girl… I’m so tired. I never deserved you, did I? Maddy… but I loved you.
I always loved you.”

Kay, can't find my blog so here it is:"We complain about men. We complain about men a lot. We blame them for objectification and the unreal media expectations. We say that they either want to infantilise or brutalize us. We blame them for our unhappiness in whichever relationship we happen to be in at the moment. But the truth. We do this to ourselves. The unrealistic expectations and objectification . . . women’s magazines, reinforced by women’s fiction and chick flicks; often written and promoted by . . . you got it . . . other women. As for infantilisation and brutalization . . . have you seen Lifetime TV, the WB or any ‘women’s’ television show? And again, reinforced by popular women’s fiction . . . written by whom? Women.
And I admit . . . I get into my Markie Post-Judith Light-Lifetime Movie marathon moods just like everyone else. It’s just. . .am I wrong or is insipid victimization our most prevalent form of escapist entertainment?"
What is really troubling about today's feminism...is the determination to shrink from personal responsibility, courage and adulthood. It is this kind of thinking which leads women to call for curtailing the freedom of speech of others and attempting to decide for all of us, what kind of opinions are "unacceptable" and from whom.
If you don't like someone's review, don't read it. There's no need to start up a firestorm of defensive aggression around it.
What I kind of love about of craziness that has surrounded the GFY trope; is that somehow some people see the opinions of gay males as 'policing' or 'dictating' the sexuality of women; while completely ignoring the voices of queer women who have attempted to voice their own concerns about this trope.
What of women like me, who find the idea that I need to be 'protected' from the "unacceptable" opinions of LGBQT men offensive, condescending and matriarchal? If I weren't straight I'd be livid . . . actually, I'm pretty damn livid anyway. Imagine being invited to a round table discussion of which you are the topic but are vastly outnumbered; and then being told that your opinions are "hostile", "policing" and "dictatorial". How would that feel? Particularly if you've been getting calls all week telling you why you "shouldn't be offended".
I swear, if there is a phrase sure to blow my pressure gauge, it's that one. Since when do I need permission from white, straight women to be offended? What frame of reference could possibly exist in their lives which compares to my day-to-day reality that gives them the ability to recognize the things which should or should not be offensive to me? Check. Your damn. Privilege.
Very sleeeeepy. But writing again, which is good. I just need to contact my partner in order to push the deadline. It takes a while sometimes to find that hook...the thing that will allow me to enter the story and start, the characters speaking to each other.Saturday before last, the hook appeared in the form of a secondary character. I suddenly realized that her motivations are what drive the plot of the first episode. Et voila! I'm hearing the voices in,my head! The characters' voices....not the other kind.
