Tom Trondson's latest novel, Sports & Leisure, comes out in June, 2025. His debut novel, Moving in Stereo, was the winner of the American Writing Awards 2022 Sports Book of the Year. His work has been featured in Glimmer Train, The Under Review, and elsewhere. He holds an MFA from Hamline University, where he's taught creative writing. Twenty-five years ago he quit the corporate world to be a stay-at-home dad, something he wouldn't change for the world. Recently, he and his buddies cycled a Tour de France segment, the famed Colle Dell'Agnello, a category one climb that travels from a small village to the mountains above the treeline. He has lived in six states but now calls the lakes and woods of Minnesota his home. ...more

For me, it's important to work everyday but mix things up when the juice isn't flowing. That might mean stepping away for a walk or putting a scene aside for a few days to let the ideas sink in better. It might mean working several projects at once so the material feels fresh when I sit down to write. (less)

The first half of the novel was funny, engaging, bringing the 80s college experience to life. Then… the story jumped way ahead in a rushed, schmaltzy way. Not sure what the writer was thinking…

Captivating. Szalay does so much on the page with doing less. He leaves the reader to sort things out. A compelling page turner.

I read this after seeing Haring’s exhibit at Walker Art Museum last year. He was a fascinating artist, prolific, exuberant, a zest for life. At one point he realizes he’s a drawer on the level of Picasso—no sketching needed, just draw. The book itsel ...more

Swashbuckling, high seas adventure with a dash of gallows humor, sex, violence; a coming of age story. Strange, but I thought of Voltaire when I read it. Inventive language and turns of plot. Recommend.
