February thoughts

Hello friends,

I hope you and yours are well. If you’re in the northern hemisphere, have you been taking time to rest and recuperate before spring and summer burst into life?

Since Christmas, I’ve been saying no to nearly all social meetups. The amount of socializing I do when I bring my

I actually enjoyed the informative summary of a period of India’s history and got into it right away. And I thought I would have enjoyed the stories, but they were dry (I hate saying that) and fairly colorless. They jumped around a little too much to ...more
Elicia Johnson is finished with The End of Karma: It’s good enough (or at least the topic is) that I don’t want to DNF, but not the most enjoyable read. I realized that it because it’s written by a journalist and therefore it’s a long list of facts with very little color. It makes sense, that’s her job. But boy would I love some good storytelling to stir my heart for the people she tells of.

This book is the perfect amalgamation of unhinged cohesion.
It’s sci-fi that means something.
It’s snappy and fun.
And its space world-building is anchored in the reality we’re familiar with.

"Read it for a class, and it’s changed my writing into rituals of creativity. I felt akin to the way she writes about creating stories, it’s not just about making something, it’s about giving a voice to the secret life that follows you around in your " Read more of this review »

“We are all strangers in a strange land, longing for home, but not quite knowing what or where home is. We glimpse it sometimes in our dreams, or as we turn a corner, and suddenly there is a strange, sweet familiarity that vanishes almost as soon as it comes.”
Madeleine L'Engle, The Rock That Is Higher: Story as Truth

Madeleine L'Engle
“Behind the violence of the birthing of galaxies and stars and planets came a quiet and tender melody, a gentle love song. All the raging of creation, the continuing hydrogen explosions on the countless suns, the heaving of planetary bodies, all was enfolded in a patient, waiting love.”
Madeleine L'Engle, Many Waters

Madeleine L'Engle
“I saw Eternity the other night,
Like a great ring of pure and endless light,
All calm, as it was bright,
And round beneath it, Time, in hours, days, years,
Driven by the spheres,
Like a vast shadow moved, in which the world
And all her train were hurled.”
Madeleine L'Engle, A Ring of Endless Light

Madeleine L'Engle
“On the other side of pain, there is still love.”

Madeleine L'Engle
“Part of doing something is listening. We are listening. To the sun. To the stars. To the wind.”
