Most of my research was done in books and online, because of course what I really needed to know was not so much what Brooklyn is like now (though that's helpful too), but what it was like in the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s. I loved the short time I spent there and have always wanted to go back. Both my parents lived in Brooklyn briefly in the 1950s, living with older family members who had moved there long before. Newfoundlanders have such strong roots there, and yet that Newfoundland presence has almost completely vanished from Brooklyn's history.(less)

The Safekeep, by Yael Van Der Wouden

This is a beautifully written, quiet but very intense novel, set in the Netherlands in 1961. The main character is Isabel, a young woman of about thirty living alone in her family home. Her parents are dead and both her brothers are off living their lives, but Isabel seems stuck in place, unable to move forward. There were times in the first part of the book when I wondered whether disliking I

I liked this book. I would have liked it a lot more if the blurb hadn’t given so much information that it spoiled every twist and turn of the plot.

“I'll be a story in your head. That's okay. We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh? 'Cause it was, you know. It was the best. The daft old man who stole a magic box and ran away. Did I ever tell you that I stole it? Well I borrowed it. I was always going to take it back.”
