Most of my research was done in books and online, because of course what I really needed to know was not so much what Brooklyn is like now (though that's helpful too), but what it was like in the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s. I loved the short time I spent there and have always wanted to go back. Both my parents lived in Brooklyn briefly in the 1950s, living with older family members who had moved there long before. Newfoundlanders have such strong roots there, and yet that Newfoundland presence has almost completely vanished from Brooklyn's history.(less)

Grown Ups, by Marian Keyes

I recently realized I had never read anything by Marian Keyes even though she ticks a lot of my “favourite writer” boxes (Irish, writes sad/funny/hopeful novels about women and families, was hilarious on a podcast I listened to recently) so I picked up Grown Ups and it was a great place to start with her body of work. The novel traces a few months in the lives of the extended Casey family, who

Permanent Astonishment: A Memoir, by Tomson Highway

I’m not sure what to say about this book. It’s brilliantly written, a wonderful story of Indigenous childhood and joy in rural Manitoba in the 1960s Read more of this blog post »

“I'll be a story in your head. That's okay. We're all stories in the end. Just make it a good one, eh? 'Cause it was, you know. It was the best. The daft old man who stole a magic box and ran away. Did I ever tell you that I stole it? Well I borrowed it. I was always going to take it back.”
