Ralph Cann asked Trudy J. Morgan-Cole:

Just finished your 'By the Rivers of Brooklyn" book in our book club. Really enjoyed it. How much time did you spend in Brooklyn as part of your researching for the novel?

Trudy J. Morgan-Cole I only got to spend three weeks in Brooklyn -- my kids were very young at the time and I didn't have the freedom to be away from home much longer than that. Most of my research was done in books and online, because of course what I really needed to know was not so much what Brooklyn is like now (though that's helpful too), but what it was like in the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s. I loved the short time I spent there and have always wanted to go back. Both my parents lived in Brooklyn briefly in the 1950s, living with older family members who had moved there long before. Newfoundlanders have such strong roots there, and yet that Newfoundland presence has almost completely vanished from Brooklyn's history.
