The first time I was exposed to books, I knew I'd found a world I could live in. Along with books, I grew up with a wonderful oral tradition of storytelling, passed down from my ancestors who didn't have books and weren't allowed to read.

My mother sometimes told wonderful stories because she couldn't always afford books but still wanted to foster a love of stories and use your imagination in her children.

I always had a book with me in school and as a shy, introverted kid, it was like I always had friends, people I could hang out with, who to be honest, were much more intelligent and exciting than the children around me.
