Neil Albert rated a book it was amazing Angle of Repose: Modern Classic by Wallace Stegner	Error rating book. Refresh and try again. Rate this book Clear rating 1 of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars
It's a little silly to add my voice to a 60 year-old book but that will not deter me. I picked it up at a book sale some years ago, read a few pages, and set it aside. More recently a good friend recommended it and I tried again. Very glad I did. It' ...more

Neil Albert rated a book it was ok Theo of Golden by Allen Levi (Goodreads Author)	Error rating book. Refresh and try again. Rate this book Clear rating 1 of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars
The most interesting part of the book was the Epilogue, where the author states that he wrote it as an exercise and put it in a drawer. Good for him. He knew what Carol Shields famously said, that every writer has a lot of bad work in him, and if he ...more

Neil Albert rated a book it was amazing The Full Disclosure Iliad by Jeff Wright	Error rating book. Refresh and try again. Rate this book Clear rating 1 of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars
This is an easy review to write--if you loved The Trojan War Podcast (or The Odyssey Podcast, for that matter) you will love this book. It's a condensation of the podcast material; and a welcome one, because Jeff has so much background in the myths t ...more

Neil Albert rated a book really liked it It Will Come Back To You by Sigrid Nunez	Error rating book. Refresh and try again. Rate this book Clear rating 1 of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars
I have always admired Sigrid Nunez's essays in The New York Review of Books and picked up this book with interest. I did the audiobook, which was well produced. A variety of readers were used, and they were well matched to the stories each read. It's ...more

Neil Albert rated a book really liked it Sword Beach: D-Day Baptism by Fire by Max Hastings	Error rating book. Refresh and try again. Rate this book Clear rating 1 of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars
The term "the forgotten battle" is greatly over-used, but the British landing on Sword beach is one that has needed a modern detailed treatment for some time. With thirty books under his belt, Max Hastings can be counted on to deliver a clear and care ...more

Neil Albert made a comment on Daniel’s review of The River Is Waiting " Liked your one-line summation! I gave it two stars and a long rant. You are smarter than I am "

Neil Albert rated a book it was ok The River Is Waiting by Wally Lamb (Goodreads Author)	Error rating book. Refresh and try again. Rate this book Clear rating 1 of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars
I write this review with reluctance--not because it will be run over by the "I LOVE WALLY LAMB" machine, but because this started off as a heck of a book until the author hijacked his own story and turned it into something I could barely stomach. The ...more

Neil Albert rated a book really liked it The Jutland Scandal: The Truth About the First World War's Greatest Sea Battles by John E.T. Harper	Error rating book. Refresh and try again. Rate this book Clear rating 1 of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars
The title is slightly misleading; this is not just a reprint of Reginald Bacon's The Jutland Scandal; it also includes John Harper's The Truth About Jutland. Two books in one volume; and since both books are long out of print, this one is a valuable ...more

I have a friend who is a great admirer of Ann Patchett, and she introduced me to her book of essays, These Precious Days, that I greatly admired. Patchett is a clear and forceful writer and a clear thinker. She is a master essayist; and, I am told, a ...more

Neil Albert rated a book it was amazing The Fleet at Flood Tide: America at Total War in the Pacific, 1944-1945 by James D. Hornfischer	Error rating book. Refresh and try again. Rate this book Clear rating 1 of 5 stars 2 of 5 stars 3 of 5 stars 4 of 5 stars 5 of 5 stars
I listened to this as an audiobook under press of circumstance; something I would not necessarily recommend for a work of this complexity because I am sure I missed some maps. But the strength of the research and writing shines through. He covers the ...more
