Sierra Dean is a reformed historian. She was born and raised in the Canadian prairies and is allowed annual exit visas in order to continue her quest of steadily conquering the world one city at a time. Making the best of the cold Canadian winters, Sierra indulges in her less global interests: drinking too much tea and writing urban fantasy.

Ever since she was a young girl she has loved the idea of the supernatural coexisting with the mundane. As an adult, however, the idea evolved from the notion of fairies in flower beds, to imagining that the rugged-looking guy at the garage might secretly be a werewolf. Getting books into audio can actually be tricky, because the audio publisher needs to come to an arrangement with my book publisher. It's definitely something both myself and my publisher are pushing for, though, and I would definitely love to see them in an audio edition.(less)

2.75 rounded up. Got a lot of "man writing women" vibes from this and not in a complimentary way. It had good moments but the ending was kind of ludicrous. ...more

I admittedly did not love the race theme of this floor, but did I also cry when Prepotente said the thing he said to Carl in the Miriam Dom apartment? Yes. Yes I did.

Closer to 2.5, but rounded up. Friedman knows his stuff, but this felt like a really interesting article stretched into a full book, as the chapters took on a formulaic approach. The topic is interesting, but could be dry in places. I also think I wo ...more

“Detective Castilla, your Secret is safe with me." She blinked with surprise, and I groaned. "God, Holden. How long have you been waiting to use that line?"
"About three years."
"And in three years you couldn't find any room for improvment?”
Sierra Dean

“...Fate forced me to become a two-man woman. But there was no effing way I could be a four-man woman.
Even metaphysics couldn't keep that from being whorey.”
Sierra Dean, A Bloody Good Secret

“Eugenia’s mouth formed an O shape, her eyes wide and a little wet.
Now I had not only told her Santa wasn’t real, I’d told her the Easter Bunny went on killing sprees to eat the children who didn’t find his eggs.”
Sierra Dean, Keeping Secret

Topics Mentioning This Author

“In the ill-judged execution of the well-judged plan of things the call seldom produces the comer, the man to love rarely coincides with the hour for loving. Nature does not often say 'See!' to her poor creature at a time when seeing can lead to happy doing; or reply 'Here!' to a body's cry of 'Where?' till the hide-and-seek has become an irksome, outworn game. We may wonder whether at the acme and summit of the human progress these anachronisms will be corrected by a finer intuition, a close interaction of the social machinery than that which now jolts us round and along; but such completeness is not to be prophesied, or even conceived as possible. Enough that in the present case, as in millions, it was not the two halves of a perfect whole that confronted each other at the perfect moment; part and counterpart wandered independently about the earth in the stupidest manner for a while, till the late time came. Out of which maladroit delay sprang anxieties, disappointments, shocks, catastrophes -- what was called a strange destiny.”
Thomas Hardy, Tess of the D’Urbervilles

“Because the song was that great and because we all really paid attention to it. Five minutes of a lifetime were truly spent, and we felt young in a good way.”
Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower

“I want to change my punctuation. I long for exclamation marks, but I'm drowning in ellipses.”
Isaac Marion, Warm Bodies

“As he read, I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”
John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

“You told me once that a soul isn't something a person is born with but something that must be built, by effort and error, study and love. And you did that with more dedication than most, that work of building a soul-not for your own benefit but for the benefit of those that knew you.”
Chad Harbach, The Art of Fielding
