"First They Kill You," a medical memoir, is Charles Monagan's latest book (2025). In highly readable form, it recounts his extended battle with two blood cancers and the drama of the eventual cure through stem-cell replacement. His novels include "The Easter Confession," called "a superior whodunit" in a starred review from Publishers Weekly, and "Carrie Welton," which won across-the-board praise as a historical novel set in 1860s Connecticut, New York City, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and Boston.

I hope you'll give my novel "Carrie Welton" a go. It was named an "Editor's Choice" by the Historical Novel Society, so if that's a genre you like, this book, with its 19th-century young female protagonist, should be for you. Here's what the HNS had to say in part:
“Let me assure you that this is not a poor-little-rich-girl sob story, but a textured, penetrating portrayal of real persons and actual events. Charles Monagan writes a terrific tale in Carrie Welton, one of the smoothest reads I’ve seen in a long time. Mr. Monagan’s career as an award-winning writer and editor spans decades, but this is his first novel. I hope it won’t be his last. Highly recommended.”
