Unlike many authors, I haven't been writing stories all my life. I've been too busy living life.
My travels took me from the fjords of Norway to the southern tip of New Zealand. In between, I've worked in so many different towns I've lost count. I've shoveled cow shit, mustered sheep, been polite to customers, traded insults with politicians and need to be forgiven on occasions when I get confused as to who needs what where. Now that I'm settled in Sydney, Australia, my real-life experiences can morph with my fertile imagination and create fiction which I hope readers will enjoy.
My philosophy on posting reviews is to recommend books I like which I think other people may not read and state why I like them. These are only the tip of the iceber

Hi Suzie
Thanks for the lovely words about Steve and Don. Glad you enjoyed them and the book. I have plots drawn up for other books where they would appear as secondary characters, but I am not writing at the moment. Hopefully, my mojo will return and I can transfer the stories from my head to the page. Unfortunately, you can't force these things and I'd rather not do them than not do them or their stories justice.(less)

Another Great Book by John Wiltshire

The Buckland-in-the-Vale and Sandstone Tor Gay Book Club (Inaugural Meeting) The Buckland-in-the-Vale and Sandstone Tor Gay Book Club by John Wiltshire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

After a reread and loving it even more, I feel more comfortable sharing in more detail why I like this so much. I don't usually reveal plot in my reviews but will in this case, so beware. Many spoilers ahead.

The book starts off with the luridly, lycra-clad and openly gay school teacher, Rory, seein Read more of this blog post »

“If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!”
Rudyard Kipling, If: A Father's Advice to His Son

“I like writing that is restrained and invisible. I don't mean that I like things to be simple and easy to decode, the opposite. I like writers who deal with ambiguities, biased viewpoint and subjective truth; I like the writing to be clean but everything behind the writing to be complex. I like to feel that there are things going on in the spaces and behind the lines.”
S.U. Pacat

“Who needed rings to bind you unto death when you had scars and stitches, bruises and blood?”
John Wiltshire, Conscious Decisions of the Heart

“There was one moment when it could have gone either way. Nikolas's heart told him one thing, but his cock another, and it was the cock that won, his cock made the right decision.”
John Wiltshire, Conscious Decisions of the Heart

“Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.”
Terry Pratchett, Jingo

A.B. Gayle Ah. Very interesting, my niece is in that field. And I'm pretty sure she lectures down at the GC.
Of course, I barrack for the Cane Toads. I still remember Billy Moore chanting "Queenslander" coming out of the tunnel. And of course, Darren rools, man. I've been a fan of his from Day 1.
But, you said you weren't into sport.....

Brendan (BJ) lol go queensland! haha Do you go for the Blues or the Maroons? ;) haha so you guys are spread all the way up and down the coast! :P

The results will have the final say :S haha I'm studying Nutrition and Dietetics :D

A.B. Gayle Hi John. I live in Sydney but am a Queenslander by birth. I have a sister living in the GC hinterland and another in Brisvegas.

Hope the exams went well. What are you studying?

Brendan (BJ) Hey A.B Thanks for the invite :) I'm friends with Justin, but we haven't really spoke much :( I think he lives near Tweed Heads but I don't have my licence yet (need to hurrrrryyyyyy upppppppp haha) so my world's pretty insular atm XD where abouts in this amazing country do you live? :)

A.B. Gayle Lol, don't hold your breath, Yvonne. It's one of a number on the drawing board, and I'm not sure what to start with first: "Angel+Devil" (the follow up to "Red+Blue" a novel at the fingers crossed submission stage with Dreamspinner), "A Very Bad Idea", "Another Joe Blow" and "Who F*cked Cock Robin" whose characters and plot have been swirling around in my head for months!

message 15: by Yvonne

Yvonne Thanks for the friendvite. Glad to hear about the plans for the book. I'll check it out once it's available.

A.B. Gayle I may no post regularly at the SF thread, but I do read it and note the comments made. I find it all helpful while editing. It's good to see the story from a reader's perspective.
Sometimes authors (and editors) are too close to the work.

Sarasaya Alison, Thanks!!
And the pleasure is all mine.

My insights are at your service.:-)

A.B. Gayle Hi Lisa
A sequel? You're the second person who asked me that. Sometime during the following week they will need to discover whether their May/December relationship can survive the pressures of their age difference.
Reality and the easy option would be that it wouldn't and come the day after the Mardi Gras party the following weekend, Patrick would be waving a bittersweet goodbye to Damien at the airport. But maybe they do have a future together.
Both you and I will have to find out how!!!
hugs
Alison
