How to avoid 'idiot compassion'

Have you ever done something that goes completely against your principles, dear reader? Come, come - we know each other far too well for you to grow coy with me! I am not asking you to publish a confession in the village square. Merely to pause and ask if your conduct always aligns with those noble values you press so earnestly to your heart? Or whether, on occasion, it wanders off without sup

“Most people think that their only option is to change their circumstances. But these are not the true causes of their unhappiness. It has more to do with the way they think about their circumstances.”
David Michie, The Dalai Lama's Cat

“You know, Professor, this stray kitten and you have one very important thing in common.'

'I can't imagine,' responded the professor coolly.

'Your life is the most important thing in the world to you,' said His Holiness. 'Same for this kitten.”
David Michie, The Dalai Lama's Cat

“We all share these wishes. But also the way we look for happiness and try to avoid discomfort is the same. Who among us does not enjoy a delicious meal? Who does not wish to sleep in a safe, comfortable bed? Author, monk—or stray kitten—we are all equal in that.” Across the coffee table, the history professor shifted in his seat. “Most of all,” the Dalai Lama said, leaning over and stroking me with his index finger, “all of us just want to be loved.”
David Michie, The Dalai Lama's Cat

Topics Mentioning This Author

“happiness is determined more by one's state of mind than by external events.”
Dalai Lama, The Art of Happiness

“I'm a dog, and because you humans are much less rational beasts than I, you're telling yourselves, 'Dogs don't talk.' Nethertheless, you seem to believe a story in which corpses speak and characters use words they couldn't possibly know. Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.”
Orhan Pamuk, My Name Is Red

“Another experiment, conducted by Pascual-Leone when he was a researcher at the National Institutes of Health, provides even more remarkable evidence of the way our patterns of thought affect the anatomy of our brains. Pascual-Leone recruited people who had no experience playing a piano, and he taught them how to play a simple melody consisting of a short series of notes. He then split the participants into two groups. He had the members of one group practice the melody on a keyboard for two hours a day over the next five days. he had the members of the other group sit in front of a keyboard for the same amount of time but only imagine playing the song--without ever touching the keys. Using a technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, Pascual-Leone mapped the brain activity of all the participants before, during, and after the test. he found that the people who had only imagined playing the notes exhibited precisely the same changes in their brains as those who had actually pressed the keys. Their brains had changed in response to actions that took place purely in their imaginations--in response, that is, to their thoughts. Descartes may have been wrong about dualism, but he appears to have been correct in believing that our thoughts can exert a physical influence on, or at least cause a physical reaction in, our brains. We become, neurologically, what we think. (p33)”

message 2: by David

David Just in case anyone is wondering why all my reviews are 4 or 5 star, that's because I only post reviews on books I think are really worthwhile. I come across a lot of books I'm not so enthusiastic about. But as an author, I know how hurtful it is to read negative reviews - often the reviewer seems to me to have got the wrong end of the stick, so to speak. So as my mother used to tell me: 'If you can't speak pleasantly, don't speak at all.'

David Very excited that The Art of Purring, the sequel to The Dalai Lama's Cat is now out in UK and Australia, and officially launched in US this Thursday!
