Freebie!

Talon Rihai are thrilled to announce that our kinky fantasy short-fiction eBook "Demonic Interlude" is now available to download free:

http://www.stormmoonpress.com/books/D...

The soul-sucking demon Mael has grown increasingly weary of the mortal who has recently bound him. Though he knows he will soon be able to complete his contract and devour the mortal's soul, time is relative when an ancient demon of great power finds himself controlled by a human fool. Frustrated with the mortal's limited imagination and pedestrian orders, Mael strikes the man unconscious and uses the small respite to summon his own demonic slave, Feng, to service his long unsated needs. They'll have to hurry before Mael must face humiliating consequences!

We hope our readers enjoy this taste of our love of m/m erotica, fantasy, and dark humor.

Poll: To-read Lists

How do you manage your to-read list? Is it for everything that catches your eye, or just books you truly intend to read and don't want to forget the name of?

With about 25 on mine, I'm torn between the excitement of making note of what I want to read and the pressure of knowing I don't have time to read even half that many in the next few months. What about you?

Do tell!

(I'm missing the poll functions on LiveJournal and deviantArt right now.)

Wondrous Befuddlement: Review Weirdness

I know everything is a matter of taste, and that definitely includes erotica. You like what you like. I like what I like. And always, to each hir own. Some like it hot. Make mine tutti-fruity.

There are moments, however, when my mind gets blown by discordant responses to something I’ve written. Right now it’s about my short story “Too Wondrous to Measure.” I wrote this flight of fancy about a woman who is Godzilla’s lover because (1) I love Godzilla, (2) I love erotica with a touch of humor, and (3) I love glimpses into the absurd. The tale ended up with an admittedly odd home in
Gotta Have It: 69 Stories of Sudden Sex. I queried editor Rachel Kramer Bussel before I submitted it, asking whether her call for “quickies” was about people having quickies or just short-short erotic fiction. She said both, so I offered my tale for its erotic content and its brevity. When the book emerged, the “sudden sex” in the subtitle made clear the focus of my naughty nibble wasn’t quite on target anymore. Still, she wanted to include it, and I was pleased to see it in print. (Moreover, since that time, Maxim Jakubowski has decided to include it in his forthcoming Mammoth Book of Erotic Quickies. I am thrilled about that, too, and it gives me hope for humanity. Or for Godzilla-themed porn, anyhow.)

But then there are the reviews. Of the dozen or so erotic short stories I’ve gotten in print to date, several have been singled out as notable within their respective collections. I squee when that happens, audibly. By contrast, one has been called an absolute stinker, and that made me pout. Most, though, seem to fall somewhere in the middle and aren’t mentioned directly by reviewers at all. “Too Wondrous to Measure,” however, has the singular honor of being both loved and loathed, having actively squicked at least two reviewers, so badly as to need warn others that it’s there. Beware story 12 of 69! It’s waiting to getcha! Like Godzilla on a rampage, the story can apparently not only kill your arousal, it can give you The Squick.

You know, I consider the story more than up-front about where it’s headed, from the very first words. The opening line argues that whether size matters “is a question that only makes sense when relative dimensions are not so skewed that a single inserted claw tip fills you up like the biggest cock you’ve ever taken and you have to use your entire body to jerk him off.” To me, that’s just absurd. And funny. Now, if that’s not funny to you, dear reader, that's fine. However, one can probably guess that the rest of the story is not going to be about playboys in penthouses or getting hot for teacher. Several readers, however, apparently did not heed, and went on to read The Whole Story (all 1000 words), and found it…well, icky. Worse than that, in fact, or they wouldn’t be singling it out in their reviews. Adding WTFBBQ to OMG, one reviewer actually critiqued it for being “unbelievable.” Now, I’m entirely sympathetic, but where the heck do I go with that judgment!? Um...yep...Godzilla isn’t real.

Sure, part of the problem is that the story first came out in a book that ended up being mostly a collection of sexual quickies rather than erotic flash fic (though, oddly, no reviews to date have mentioned the story simply not fitting the theme). But it does amaze me that I have had such incredibly oppositional response to the story, from joy to dismay. I guess all I can do is smile, shrug, and end this post where the story itself ends, as my self-insert heroine heads off to Godzilla’s island, away from prying eyes, hoping love will see them through. “Stranger than strange, I know,” she concludes. “But then, all of life’s a miracle, isn’t it? Too wondrous to measure.” Even book reviews.

First of the Year Giveaway!

Now that we’re After the First hours of 2013, co-authors Talon Rihai and Salome Wilde announce a Goodreads giveaway of their contemporary m/m romance novella, After the First Taste of Love!

As they began work on their novella (the first in a planned trilogy), Talon and Salome discussed what they most love in m/m romance and what they most wanted to see more of in the genre. They began with the role of sincere friendship in the making of a compelling couple. Then, they considered race and ethnicity, sharing their frustration with so many novels featuring only white protagonists. This quickly led to the creation of Angelo (the Korean-Cuban loner who’s afraid of love) and Nick (the Mexican-Jewish brat with a heart of gold).

To enter this giveaway, add a comment to this post that tells us one thing you’d personally like to see more of in m/m romance fiction. On Tuesday, January 15, Tal and Sal will select two winners: one randomly and one for their favorite comment!

[For more on the novella, visit Sal and Tal’s After the First Taste of Love page or Storm Moon Press.]

Happily Exhausted!

Greetings from the here and now, where absurd apocalyptic predictions meet with the natural realities of another lovely winter solstice and hopes that outrage over gun violence finally brings some meaningful commitments to greater peace, compassion, and sanity for all.

Meanwhile: smut! Or erotic romance in forthcoming anthologies, at any rate:

"Double-cross": a wise-cracking, hard-boiled detective tale of trans lust, coming March 2013 in Legal Briefs, a Storm Moon Press anthology of law-themed erotica. All profits will be donated to the Lambda Legal Fund!

"1889 A.D.": a historical tale of forbidden m/m love that blossoms between two European Jews--a young man of faith and a radical activist--aboard a ship bound for America. Forthcoming in MLR Press's Lust in Time: Erotic Romance Through the Ages, edited by Rob Rosen. (Each tale will be titled by the year it occurs, from prehistory through the 21st century. Clever, isn't it? I can't wait to read the whole book.)

Happy new year to all and to all a good read!

Talon Rihai and I are thrilled that After the First Taste of Love is selling well and the feedback we're getting informally is engaged and positive. Our mixed-race characters and the trajectory of their relationship isn't everyone's cup of tea, but we don't need it to be. We write with love and about love and through the giddy path of boylove and hurt/comfort to bliss!

Meanwhile, I've had anoter erotic story contracted for publication in 2013: "New Dick," a short, gay hard-boiled detective romp in a collection of gay Rookie Cop fiction edited by Shane Allison for Cleis Press.

In other news, I'm headed on the path to editing collections, most likely for Storm Moon Press and/or Cleis Press. Details forthcoming!

Happy December, everyone -- including whatever holidays you celebrate, from Xmas or Hannukah to Kwaanza or Solstice to the joys of days off work!

Happy to Be Here!

While it took me far too long to activate this author's page, I'm very happy to be here. I look forward to chatting with like-minded lovers of erotica, especially of the queer and pansexual romance sort!

After publishing lots of short fiction, my first novella, After the First Taste of Love, co-authored with Talon Rihai, is due out this month, and I hope it goes over well!

In the near future, look for these naughty goodies:

"Strange Status Quo," full of hotel rooms and a lesbian voyeur, published in Rachel Kramer Bussel's Twice the Pleasure: Bisexual Women's Erotica

"Booney's Hunter," a Southern gothic tale of violence, exploitation, sexuality, and new definitions of freedom in eastern Tennessee in the early 1800s, published in a new gay sex anthology by Shane Allison (details forthcoming)

And lots more to come!
