Life involves risks, and no risk is greater than risking your very soul to save other people. In my novels people take that risk even when it leads into troubled moral waters and they must do things that need forgiveness.

When gold, greed, and a vacuum of law led to ruffians’ rule and a tolerance for murder, citizens took up arms against evil. They became known to history as the Vigilantes of Montana.
God’s Thunderbolt, The Devil in the Bottle, Gold Under Ice, and The Ghost at Beaverhead Rock (forthcoming Winter 2015) tell the story of Daniel Stark whose decisions test him in ways he never imagined. Usually, what most people might call writer's block is Sally the Subconscious trying to get through to tell me something important about the current novel. Communicating with Sally is like looking at light; I have to look aside to really see her.(less)

A reader suggested one of the new ideas, but I haven't found the story. My own family history has suggested another idea that is growing on me. My father was a great storyteller, who lived in a part of the West known for the outlaw gang that also lived there. I've been wondering how my widowed grandmother coped with raising two young boys where the Wild Bunch roamed.

The Devil in the Bottle began as a prologue to an earlier novel, but outgrew the size I intended it to be.

The Ghost at Beaverhead Rock began when I realized that the protagonist of the three earlier books in the Vigilante Quartet at some point had to confront the effects of his participation in Montana's vigilance Committee during the Civil War. And no, they did not lynch African Americans. They just hanged outlaws.(less)

Why I’m Ending This Blog

De facto, I ended this blog about a year ago, but in the back of my mind, I thought I’d start it up again. I’ve decided to discontinue it instead.
