Her fund raising business was booming while my stockbroker business had about run its course. I liked to fire clients who gave me too much crap. I had three left. So my wife says "I need a housewife" at that dinner I mentioned, and I jumped on it like a cat on a rat. "I'll be your housewife," I said. "It'll give me more time to write." Boy was I wrong, and it's a job I can't dump even past retirement age. Only five novels in the 15 years. I have to run now. The dishes are piling up.(less)

New Thriller Coming From Down & Out Publishing

A Special Operations “fixer” for Homeland Security, U.S. Marine General Ray Hauser, teams up with Air Force Special Agent Sunny Hicks to recover a stolen GAU-8, the Gatling-gun like nose cannon of the military’s most destructive gunship, the A-10 Warthog. The weapon fires three thousand rounds a minute, each round’s explosive power equal to a stick of dynamite. Attached to a flatbed trailer, Read more of this blog post »

“You don’t have to be around long to understand the world is a frightening place, that life includes situations you have no control over, that anything can happen. Everybody needs friends and a family.”
Jack Getze, Making Hearts

“only a handful of pregnant women are like Emily; that is, they go to the hospital with pain and get the surprise of their life by delivering a child. Using Emily’s least-favorite math term, decimals, the number would be 0.0004 percent of all U.S. births. About fifteen hundred surprise babies a year.”
Jack Getze, Making Hearts

“I’m not sure how big ten centimeters is, but Emily’s passageway into life was definitely not large enough to suit me. In fact, everything had been pushing on me for hours. I felt like toothpaste emerging from a tube. Painfully and slowly, like an inch per hour.”

“My most important piece of advice to all you would-be writers: When you write, try to leave out all the parts readers skip.”
Elmore Leonard, Elmore Leonard's 10 Rules of Writing

“Elmore Leonard's Ten Rules of Writing

1. Never open a book with weather.
2. Avoid prologues.
3. Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue.
4. Never use an adverb to modify the verb "said”…he admonished gravely.
5. Keep your exclamation points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose.
6. Never use the words "suddenly" or "all hell broke loose."
7. Use regional dialect, patois, sparingly.
8. Avoid detailed descriptions of characters.
9. Don't go into great detail describing places and things.
10. Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.

My most important rule is one that sums up the 10.

If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.”
Elmore Leonard

“It's my attempt to remain invisible, not distract the reader from the story with obvious writing.”
Elmore Leonard, Elmore Leonard's 10 Rules of Writing

“When reading dies, the imagination soon follows.”
Ronnie Ray Jenkins
