Interview with JJ Brown, Author of DEATH AND THE DREAM

I am delighted to have my Twitter friend, JJ Brown, with me today to talk about her first published collection of haunting original fiction, DEATH AND THE DREAM. JJ lives in Brooklyn, New York, with two adult daughters. Born in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, the author has lived in New York City for two decades. She completed a PhD in genetics on studies of gene recombination and plant transposons, published in science journals, Theoretical and Applied Genetics and Genetics. The author has published other genetics research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Hepatology, as well as educational research in Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology, and BMC Medical Education. JJ has generously provided a copy of the book for one reader. All you have to do is comment or ask a question at the end of the interview to be entered to win.

BLOG: Review and Interview with J.J. Brown, Author of VECTOR

In classic tragedies, the woman in love is often written as a helpless victim. The younger, the less control she has over her tragic fate. In my experience, real women are as often in control as they are controlled, when it comes to love. And so, the idea of writing a new kind of tragic love story, where the female character was calling the shots became somehow irresistible to me. Writing Vector a Modern Love Story, I created the central character as a young woman, Eva. She comes of age on her own terms, and she takes control of her relationships and her future. Impulsive behavior is her tragic flaw. It leads her to places no one would want to go, but where many must go.

The basis of the story was the opera La Bohème, a love story interrupted by unbearable pain of a chronic disease, tuberculosis, TB. In modern times, the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV, has taken center stage. It is feared but not understood, surrounded by myth and prejudices. The disclosure of HIV can bring up feelings that change relationships and may separate lovers. In Vector, the modern plague of HIV haunts Eva as she falls in love and crosses the boundary from her student life to adult life. Writing the story, I explored the many relationships the young woman develops, from friends and family to teachers and lovers.

Fracking the World Around Us, or Not

Author JJ Brown is here with me today to talk about fracking. Some people think this is the wave of the future for "clean gas." Others see this as a tsunami of environmental disasters crashing toward us. Today, Jennifer will tell us more about fracking and I will provide a review of her latest book on the topic, BRINDLE24, which also carries a modern Romeo and Juliet story.

My latest novel Brindle 24 is about a family on the last day in the life of a town during an ecologic apocalypse. The setting is a rural area similar to where I grew up, in upstate New York. The story follows a nuclear family and their neighbors living close to a gas drilling site that’s plagued by leaking flammable and explosive gasses. I felt compelled to write this story because the decision of whether we will “frack” the world around us for gas, or not, is still open for debate. Debate it we should, in every way possible. Let me explain why.
