Today, as part of the Hunting Lila Blog Tour I've done an interview for Bookbabblers.

My favourite question:
What made you set ‘Hunting Lila’ in California?

I love California. After Bali it’s my favourite place in the world. It’s so spectacularly beautiful. I wanted to write about places I had been to, that I would feel confident describing, and I knew I didn’t want to base the book entirely in south London where I grew up. I mean it’s just not as glamorous really, is it?

But the ultimate decision to base it in California came when I was researching Marine bases. Lila’s brother Jack and his best friend Alex work for a shady military organization. I wanted them to be trained marines (too much watching 24 and Generation Kill). They needed to be able to handle weapons, kick serious bad guy butt, have access to sensitive information, know how to go on the run without being detected and… ok, maybe I just have a thing for a man in uniform with an amazingly ripped body who rides a motorbike dangerously…yeah, that would be closer to the truth.

When I was researching the book I looked up Marine bases in the US and found there was one in southern California. And double excitement… it was where Top Gun had been filmed. It was a Bingo! moment. I think I sat there grinning as all the pieces slotted into place (minus Tom Cruise).

Very excitingly, Losing Lila's cover is finally ready to be revealed to the world. What do you think?

I love the strapline: 'It's time to stop running and start fighting.'

I wanted it to express how this book is all about the action and Lila coming into her own. And she does. She kicks ASS. Am very excited about its release...just three more months now and counting. Expectations are high for this one and I so want it to deliver for all the fans and bloggers who loved Hunting Lila.

I can confirm that there's tonnes more steam and some epic action scenes and a few more twists. All the characters from Hunting Lila are back in the sequel and all the questions still to be answered are finally resolved...Is Sara a goodie or a baddie? Is Jack alive? And if he is will he and Alex ever become friends again? Will Alex & Lila be able to make a go of it? Will they rescue the people from the base?

Is it a happy ending? That I can't tell you. What I can say is, it isn't a happy ending for everybody. And I can guarantee tears.

And if you need any more incentive to pre-order it let me add this extra morsel of information...there's a story from Alex's point of view in the back. So if you've ever wanted to know what Alex was thinking when Lila fell down the stairs and into his arms at the start of Hunting Lila, or ever wanted to know what was going on behind those inscrutable blue eyes of his when he was listening to her talk, then you'll be able to find out!

7 things you don’t know about my books

1. I wrote Hunting Lila on a borrowed laptop on my bed, every evening after work. It took me four months. It sold to Simon & Schuster 3 months later.

2. The character of Alex Wakeman was based in part on the actor Alex Skarsgard, after I saw him in Generation Kill playing a Marine. But I borrowed my husband’s eyes and personality (yes, I am the luckiest woman to be married to a real-life Alex Wakeman).

3. I never thought about being a writer until I was 31 and quit my job and needed something to pay the bills (oh, how ironic).

4. I have two books sitting in my drop box folder that I haven’t yet published. One is a dystopia set on a slave-carrying ship in space, and the other is a literary fiction book based on a relationship I had in my early 20s with a South African guy who grew up under apartheid.

5. Though Come Back To Me is my first new adult book, I’ve actually published an erotica too - under a pen name I will never tell anyone. I took the world from Fated and put a twist on it!

6. I set all my books in places that I’ve been. I love California and New York. I nannied in Nantucket. That’s why I set all my books there.

7. I’ve just written the screenplay for the Hunting Lila movie. The BFI funded the development of the script and we have an amazing production team behind it. Now we just need to find a director and finance it!
