I’m thinking back, trying to discern how I came to write an historical novel. When I was tapping out Morse in the pitching wireless cabins of tropical steamers, it was not in my mind – though I read all the books in the ship’s library. A career in television studios might have brought it about – thirty years working with stories in pictures soaks the mind with images. Now I’ve retired I have more time to imagine at leisure - perhaps I’ve just reached the proper age to be a teller of stories.
So my first story is about ‘Tom Fleck’ and his struggles to be a free man in our own district of Cleveland – but a Cleveland of five centuries in the past.

CreateSpace is Amazon's publishing arm - it has a site online that guides the author through the process of loading text and cover design. and it's free. The site is even easier than it was 5 years ago when I first used it. There are a few fiddly bits on Amazon: setting up an author page, linking paperback to kindle etc. If you are thinking of publishing and hit problems, I'll help where I can. There are issues of font etc that I'm beginning to understand better.(less)

Hello, Sam. Thanks for making contact. It is a rare and precious event to hear from a reader.
A good question you ask - it makes me think more deeply. My favourite ship was SS Mahanada that I joined in January 1957. I did 12 months and two voyages on her. She was wartime built, but as comfortable as an old slipper. A happy ship, I was told she had a ghost, but I never encountered it - even so, going on watch in the small hours could be creepy... just the hiss of the sea and the slow creak of rivets as I climbed the ladder to the wireless room. A ship of good comrades.

Hello Phil. After the merchant navy, I came ashore and worked in the early days of commercial TV studio backrooms. I worked on the first Avengers and the like. Over 30 years in tv I found my way into studio productions as a studio technical manager.

Harry Nicholson added a status update: "No Right Turn at Gib" is out. Two years in the writing, but a stimulating journey even so. Book four of my seagoing memoirs is published. I might have one more in me -- we shall see what comes to be. The book is rich in images from 1960 and benefits from the journal my wife kept during her seven month voyage as supernumerary on the venerable SS Marwarri to India and the Gulf of Mexico.

It is a collection of short stories that pretend to be a novel. Why not admit this and inform the reader at the outset. It is far too clever, contrived, and posturing.
