added a status update: "No Right Turn at Gib" is out. Two years in the writing, but a stimulating journey even so. Book four of my seagoing memoirs is published. I might have one more in me -- we shall see what comes to be. The book is rich in images from 1960 and benefits from the journal my wife kept during her seven month voyage as supernumerary on the venerable SS Marwarri to India and the Gulf of Mexico.

“Books are the carriers of civilization...They are companions, teachers, magicians, bankers of the treasures of the mind. Books are humanity in print.”

“Fog everywhere. Fog up the river where it flows among green airs and meadows; fog down the river, where it rolls defiled among the tiers of shipping, and the waterside pollutions of a great (and dirty) city.... Chance people on the bridges peeping over the parapets into a nether sky of fog, with fog all round them, as if they were up in a balloon and hanging in the misty clouds.”
