Occasionally I'll find myself needing to get away from the keyboard so I can think about a scene, but it's almost never because I'm unable to write, it's simply that I need to think something through before committing words to the page.

When this happens, I usually hop in my car and take a drive either along the canals or out in the country. If I really need to think I'll forgo the hairbands and put on either some classical or new age music (Enya for e.g.). If I listen to anything with lyrics I know, I just end up singing those instead of thinking about my book.

With my mind freed, I'm able to think out my scene and when I get home, hit the keyboard running. Sometimes I even pull over and jot down some notes on my iPhone so I don't forget.

My advice for those suffering from writer's block: just start typing. Anything. It can be complete nonsense, but at least the fingers are moving, and the words coming out of them get the brain trying to think of the next appropriate word that might fit, and before you know it, you're writing. Then transition to whatever it was you wanted to actually write about, and I'm betting you'll be much farther ahead than if you just keep staring at the screen, wondering what to write.

Good luck!

“Only people who don’t believe in Jesus say Common Era.”
J. Robert Kennedy, The Templar’s Relic

“And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” Koran 9:5   “The”
J. Robert Kennedy, The Templar’s Relic

“He sometimes had to remind himself that the bad guys weren’t always men who had experienced enough of life to know they didn’t like it. Too often today it was young people who were still popping pimples and hoping to pop cherries that were being pulled into extremist activities.”
J. Robert Kennedy, The Protocol
