I'm a chronic misadventurer with a malfunctioning improbability field. (How else would a Siberian end up living in Quebec City?)

I enjoy devouring hard science fiction, digging up obscure platypus trivia, overdosing on C8H10N4O2 and breaking laws of physics. (I try to put them back together when I'm done with them. Most of the time. (Sorry about Tunguska.))

The flight to Quito got delayed more and more, to the point where my cleverly planned timeline (landing before sunset) got scrambled and we touched down in pitch darkness. The customs lady couldn’t […]

This story collection is a great showcase of Tchaikovsky's range and talent. :) I've only ever known him from his sci-fi books, so it was fun to read his fantasy and slipstream, as well. As a writer myself, I particularly enjoyed the way he finished ...more

This book is a fun treat for any sci-fi fan, or for those who grew up watching old-timey TV shows about an all-American family stranded on an alien planet. :)

The premise is simple: a boy, his teen sister, and their dad go missing. Five years later, t

Such an amazing book. :) Highly recommended: a hilarious blend of Wall-E, Futurama, and Fallout. Lots of genuine laugh-out-loud moments, and a surprising amount of philosophy.

Third Class Superhero by Charles Yu
“He calls the front desk. The stringy-haired girl-woman picks up, talks low and close to the phone, as if preparing to tell a secret, as if everything might be a secret.”

Third Class Superhero by Charles Yu
“2. Most of the commercial systems out there use an artificial intelligence program called a logic-plus-intuition engine, or LPI. 3. The way an LPI works is this: a. You don't need to know how an LPI works. b. You wouldn't understand anyway.”

“Donna Woodka from Changing Places put it perfectly: “The Tao is simply logical. There’s no mysticism or need for invisible sky gods or some weird belief that you’re important enough to be reincarnated – you simply return to the Tao when you die. And you’re already there anyway, so what’s the big deal?”

“Mark Alder was a tall black man in his mid-twenties with none of the awkward clumsiness that could sometimes accompany height.”

“Filling the rest of the space were several loose pieces of chalk and innumerable small paper notes. These were written in what looked like code but was just bad handwriting.”

“You even drilled a hole in it. You know that’s illegal, right? Defacing currency.”
“Well, you’re dating a serious badass,” Mark said. “Committing crimes in the name of love and all that.”
Daniel James Clark, The Forge

“They hauled out two huge, blocky Jotun class mechs designed for deliberate, steady progress on a battlefield. One was their very own Cronus. The other was named Craig, and no one knew quite why.”
Daniel James Clark, The Forge

“Prove you’re one of us,” the pilot called. “What’s the password we’re using?”
A password was something the rebels might use to identify themselves out on the battlefield. It would make sense with everyone moving the same gear around. Zak tightened his grip on his pistol and decided.
“I don’t have a password, asshole!” Zak yelled. It was either that or make one up, which the pilot would have obviously caught; also, this felt better.
“Good,” was the response from the pilot, followed by another fit of coughing. “I killed the last guy that gave me a password.”
